I'm sorry every time I try searching for this I get results for "kvm over internet" and I can't find what I need.

In my house I have ran usb extender wires and hdmi cables through the walls from my office to my living room. I don't want the keyboard/mouse/monitor in the living room active all the time so I thought about getting a KVM switch. I am starting to think this is a bad solution though so maybe you can suggest something else instead. If I got the kvm I would want one where the settings coudl be changed over the internet (so I could be sitting on the couch in the living room and use my phone to turn all of that stuff on). I don't think that exists. Also, All the KVM's I saw used DVI instead of hdmi. If that is the case and I convert it I will be losing audio :(

Any suggestions are appreciated!

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you wanting the computer to display on two separate monitors - one by your computer, the 2nd in the living room? I would assume you would also be sharing the keyboard/mouse?

ethernet kvm switches are rather expensive, what you may want to do is to use an ethernet usb extender.

if you have an android phone you should be able to find an app that you can use with wake on lan with your computer and then enable the wake on lan feature on your motherboard.

just use a hdmi splitter such as this one to send the signal to the front room and to the monitor at the same time. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-SPLITTER-Amplifier-D...

Thank you for trying to help me! I am so lost.

I want to have 2 monitors in my office, a key board, mouse, speakers hooked up and at the same time in the living room I want to have 1 TV (using a hdmi cable so I get audio over the TV speakers), another keyboard, and another mouse hooked up. I would like the stuff in the lvingroom to be connected physically but not active (basically turned off). I want to be able to pull out my phone, use my internet connection to change the settings on the KVM switch and make the peripherals in the living room active and the peripherals in the office turned off. I realize that even if you can make this work I will have to do some cleanup at first since I am going from 2 monitors to 1 the desktop icons might bounce around and I'll have to change the resolution too but thats ok.

If you decide this cannot be done the thing I would like to give up on is the internet controls from my phone. If I have to walk upstairs to my office I suppose I'll have to live with that hahah. Before someone tells me to do it completely differently please take in mind I already have all of these wires installed and I just get under my desk and physically change them currently.

Given the length of run, you may have issues with signal loss over that length with HDMI. Are you trying to watch videos (i.e. Windows Media Center) or DVDs from the computer to the TV? If this is the case, an XBOX 360 works great to plug in via HDMI cable to the TV - you would just need to run an ethernet cable (it can be done wireless - but there can be issues with HD Video), and connect the XBOX as a Media Center Extender. All the videos that you have on your drive in the office will be available for viewing on the XBOX.

Option #2 - a very light computer build (very minimal requirements - old PC's work great for this), and use a remote desktop application to connect to the computer upstairs. If you are utilizing this for videos stored on the hard drive - there will be issues watching via remote desktop connection - the XBOX works better. If you want to surf the net, access applications/files from the computer upstairs, this works great.
