Ok, so i am switching over to intel from an AMD FX-8350, ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0. Those are my current parts and I am getting an Intel i7-3770k, and a ASUS Z77 Sabertooth. I am wondering if i HAVE to do a fresh install of my OS and if there is any way to back-up my hard drive because i don't want to re download 600Gbs of stuff. Thanks in advance!

No.
New CPU + new motherboard = fresh install, new hard drive or no.
Save all your personal files elsewhere. Music, movies, documents, whatever.

Install fresh after the new hardware install. Reinstall all your apps.

Anytime you make a major platform change, you will need to reinstall Windows since drivers are installed that are dependent on the hardware you are using. Otherwise, Windows gets confused and will either refuse to boot or will not boot correctly.

Of course, reinstalling Windows means that you have to reinstall and programs and games that you have installed, but you should be able to backup any music, videos, and any installation packages.

1. OEM or retail Windows 7? OEM will barf on the new motherboard. Retail can be reactivated....maybe with a call to the phone robot. And a fresh install is almost certainly needed and recommended.

2. Your current 600GB of stuff? Copy it elsewhere. Another partition, or another drive. Reinstall Windows. Reinstall your applications.

Yes, back it up to another drive ,.... or just buy a new HD or SSD with the new machine. ya cud install the OS on ya new machine and leave everything else exactly where it is..... note unp0lig HD data cable while installing windows

Is $20 worth getting last generation components ?

I don’t think there’s any compelling reason to move from an Ivy Bridge or even a Sandy Bridge based system to a Haswell system– there simply isn’t enough performance and feature differential to justify it. On the other hand, if you’re building a new rig from scratch, there’s little point in investing in end-of-life platforms, so going Haswell/Z87 makes sense.

Last generation Z77 Sabertooth ($235) + 3770k ($320) = $555
Last generation Z67 Sabertooth ($235*) + 3770k ($340) = $575

* $15 off w/ promo code COMPNTSEP22, ends 9/9

If the cost differential were greater I could possibly understand forgoing upgrade ability but for $20, nah Id get the new stuff
