Hi I just installed a second cpu into my pc and it is not showing up on the system basic information. do I have to do something for my pc to recognize it?

Solution
Usually I tell people that have a Dell to contact the Dell support because Dell makes it very hard to add or make changes to their computers. It's like you bought it from them but they want to control what you do to it.
There may be a setting in the bios to tell the motherboard to use two CPUs instead of one.

As you have not told us what PC or motherboard you have these two CPU's installed on, it is impossible for anyone to say what you might need to do next.

I rang the only Dell tech support number that would ring for me and it was to dell in the USA. the line was really bad and I couldn't hear him all that well. I will have to wait til tomorrow to ring and Irish line. Would any body here know the correct configuration ie CPU 0=Dimm slot ? CPU 1=Dimm slot 1. all help welcome and appriciated.

Hello again people. I want to thank everybody that tried to help me with this problem. It is all sorted now and both CPU's are running smoothly thanks to the help of Vini a Tech support worker from Dell. Inzone was 100% correct there are BIO's drivers from Dell that are needed to get windows 7 pro 64-bit to recognize the second CPU. So it is just best to give Dell a ring and they will sort you out but do put some time aside to get it done as in total it took over 3 hours to get sorted. As for what DIMM Slots to have the Ram in to have both processors working, if you have 2x2GB RAM place one in DIMM Slot 1 and the second in DIMM Slot 2.

Hi everybody again, sorry about this but I just want to give a bit extra info on the second processor install incase other people run into a problem and get led here like the way I did and got so much help. With the Dell precision 690 workstation when you add a second CPU and it is up and running it will show on your windows system setup as it did on mine that I have 2 processors and 4GB RAM installed and only 2.7GB RAM usable. This 1.3GB is not missing it has been taken by your computer for "HARDWARE INTERFACE" which means it is beening used for the 2 CPU's to work together. Don't worry this is normal and can be viewed in the "resource monitor" under "memory". Thanks again for everybodys help and input.
