My old PC (with HP LaserJet 4 printer) got fried by a lightning strike, so I bought a new desktop with Windows 8 (don't even get me started on THAT!!). Bought a SYBA SY-PEX10008 PCIexpress parallel port card (1 parallel port) so I could still use the LaserJet 4 printer. Seemed to work OK at first, but now I'm having issues. Seems like it will print one page after each reboot, but then nothing.

When I try to print, job shows up in the queue as "Printing" and shows some portion complete (like 263K/438K), but the Ready light on the printer doesn't blink and the Form Feed light is not lit. It's like no data is actually being sent to the printer. After a couple minutes, the printer status on the computer will change from "Ready" to "Out of Paper," even though the printer is NOT empty and is NOT showing a "Load Paper" message on its display (still says "Ready" on the printer).

I have reinstalled the card and the printer, and downloaded and installed the latest driver for the PCIe card. Still does the same thing. When I reinstall the printer, it does NOT print a test page, yet when I run the Printer Troubleshooter, it says no problems found.

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

And yes, the parallel cable IS plugged in at both ends!

Check the cable and printer with another computer, it could be either of those causing the issue. I'd normally suggest looking for a new firmware for the printer but if you have issues connecting to it properly, this is not a good idea in your case. If the firmware messes up loading, you could make your printer unusable.
