On a Windows Vista Home Basic PC I am able to get an internet connection using Ethernet cable, but the internal Atheros AR5007 NIC will only connect locally and it keeps defaulting back to Unidentified Public network.

No problems shown in Device manager.
I have reinstalled Windows from scratch using Compaq CDs.
Other devices connect to the wireless signal without difficulty.
I have booted off a Linux CD and been able to browse websites with the Ethernet cable disconnected.

Help.

Thanks Emerald. I updated the NIC driver from v7 to v9 and now at least the network is recognised as a single entity. However, no Internet connection. I was going on to remove encryption from the (WPA2/AES) network, but then I noticed that the computer hung while shutting down.

SFC revealed that on this newly installed copy of Windows, on a disk that has no SMART anomalies and CHKDSK reports no problems, there were corruptions that could not be corrected.

I'll sleep on this and consider my next step subconsciously.
