Which of these would suit me best?

I am starting a new build and have my gpu narrowed down to the radeon 7950 or gtx760, probably the 7950 due to the fact that it is almost $50.00 less than the 760.
Next thing to get is the cpu, looking at an i7-4770k or the FX-8350.
I pretty much only use the PC for WoW and StarCraft and to store music and family photos. I want good parts but not crazy overkill. The 8350 is $100.00 less expensive.
Will both gpu cards work with either of these cpus and will one cpu require a more demanding mobo?
Sorry for noob questions, appreciate the help greatly.

4770k would certainly be your fastest choice, though you do pay a premium on the motherboard and it requires some heavy duty cooling for overclocking. You can offset a lot of that by getting an i5-4670k. FX-8320 is a better bargain over the FX-8350, I think.

Video cards are not platform specific. You can use either with either chip. I tend to lean towards Nvidia myself, but a 7950 comes with several games if you don't already have them.

If you are not doing video editing/rendering, an I5 will give you everything you need - the I7 is overkill for gaming. GPU's are tough - you will find fanboys and shooters for both brands - my advice is to buy the best SINGLE card solution you can afford. The 760 and the 7950 are neck and neck - however, the 7950 comes with a nice games bundle and will be a little cheaper.

As far as a motherboard goes, you will need a board that has good power supply (vrm phases) for overclocking. Again, you are going to hear from Intel fanboys and AMD fanboys - pick a cpu that makes you comfortable and then a corresponding motherboard. If you plan to overclock, also plan on an aftermarket cpu cooler.

Also, be careful in what you select for a psu - "bargain" psu's are anything but - plan to spend at least $50 on a quality psu (xfx, seasonic, corsair, antec).

Give us a budget and maybe we can give you some ideas. Also, what parts are you going to re-use, or is this going to be a complete build?

How do I know which mobo I would need for each of the options? I will not be doing any teching or overclocking on the hardware.

I have seen a lot of people reference the i5 cpus, is there a reason other than price?

i7 is a quad core with hyperthreading (4 physical cores and 4 logical cores). The K designation indicates an unlocked multiplier.

i5 is a quad core without hyperthreading. (4 physical/logical cores)

FX8xxx series chips are quad 2 core modules (8 cores but each pair shares resources, somewhat similar to hyperthreading)

If you aren't overclocking, then I think you are overbuying.

For Intel I would recommend a i5-4430 and a H87 or B85 motherboard. For AMD I would recommend a FX8320 or FX6300 and a 970 motherboard. Should leave you more room for a video card and/or the rest of the system.

Thank you for the great explanation! I really do not have a budget(fresh build BTW). I am just buying pieces for 30-60 days after researching everything I can. I want a great PC for the few things I do w/o spending "stupid" money.

I have a Rosewill Thor v2 case so far.
Would like to stay around $1k-1.4k in total. If I gotta spend more then I just spread it out over a longer time period.
Want OS on a SSD and have a 1tb sata is the goal. Not sure if I should go 8 or 16gigs for ram...

I am no mastermind with this stuff, that is for sure. Lots of reading and researching taking place.

No doubt I kind of plan to overbuy for what I actually use the machine for. At the same time as new games and things come out I want to have the assurance I can play smoothly w/o dropping game settings.

This looks like it would work really good for you. The only thing could suggest is if you could possibly afford another $150 step up to a GTX-770, it just sort of fits better into a good build like this to balance things. With that said, the 760 would also do a fine job today, the 770 may give you a little head room in the future to stay at high game settings..
