how do i fix my hp g42 screen it is black and will not come on but the keyboard lights are on

I have a DV6000 sitting here doing the same thing and it needs a motherboard. The Onboard GPU is shot. Try hooking it to an external Monitor. If you get a screen, then the Laptop Screen is gone, if not then the GPU is gone and you will have to replace the motherboard. HP is no stranger to that last scenario.
