I have a 4670k @ 4.0ghz and MSI gtx 770 gaming edition. while playing skyrim (modded), i get random freezes that last about a second, give or take. fallout new vegas does not have this issue, and changing graphics settings / dropping my HD textures yielded no noticeable benefit. i was wondering if there is any way to improve my performance? most of the stuff i found seems to treat gpu shortfalls more than cpu ones, assuming they do anything for the cpu at all...

Edit: it doesn't crash, it only freezes momentarily, like a severe but short-lived "lag spike".

Modded. You have probably installed some mods that dont work together, game dosent know what to do so it crashes. Mods mostly crash the game if they are in .esm or .esp format, better said if you can see them in Data Files. Try turning all of them off in data Files and start turning the on one by one. As soon as crashing starts again than you will know the problem and you can uninstall the mod. But if that dosent fix it than you can download BOSS https://code.google.com/p/better-oblivion-sorting-software/ which may find problems and may fix them or its just going to say what the problem is. If you have uninstalled some mod it may have deleted some part of the Skyrim file. Try this: Go to your Steam Library then Right Click on Skyrims...

You have more than enough power to run this game totally maxed. What mods are you running? If you're running some of the really heavy duty stuff on the Nexus like ENB and COT, you could actually be running out of memory. How much RAM do you have? Do you have the page file disabled? Are you running an SSD?

Basically, those pauses can come from the computer scrambling to move memory around since it doesn't have room to load everything.

It could be a driver issue. I play Skyrim on my desktop with a Radeon HD 5850 and every now and then I would get the "video card has stopped responding" error. Sometime it immediately happens after loading a saved game when Skyrim is launched. I typically cannot go more than 2 hours without Skyrim crashing; either the video error or a simple CTD (crash to desktop). But CTDs don't happen very often.

Surprisingly it is rock solid stable on my Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 when using the Intel HD 3000 graphics core. I was simply testing it out. I played for several hours. I reached level 12 and I have not experienced a single crash; I have about 20 mods installed.

If it find that any file is missing steam is going to re download it and it should fix it. If you have Warez version of the game than i cant help you with that and re installing it and playing it without mods will work.
