PC refuses to boot from DVD

Trying to install Windows 8, I've reformatted a dozen times in the past. With Win8 DVD in tray, I change my boot order in Bios, save and exit, computer decides to just boot to my desktop. I restart, press F12 and choose DVD drive myself, and it decides, again, to boot to my desktop.

It's an old DVD drive, so I bought a new one, same exact issue happening. I tried it with my Win 7 DVD in the old drive and the new drive. Didn't work either time there. Both drives work perfectly fine at the desktop, they play music and even see that there's a windows disc in them.

I swapped SATA cords, power cords from my PSU, nothing works. This used to work just fine and now the same process isn't working at all.

So apparently you don't have to boot from disc to reformat into a new OS if you can get to your desktop. With a Windows disc in, you can click the setup.exe from the autoplay and it'll do it without you even having to mess with bios or boot order. No idea why I never tried it before, but it worked. Thanks for all your help guys

Assuming the disc is bootable i.e. a retail or a properly burned iso image then it may be worth having a quick look at the BIOS to see if there is a switch to enable AHCI/ATA emulation on that DVD drive.

Worth a try at least.

The disk is fine, it's a retail one I got from school for very cheap. Even my Windows 7 disc I used to use all the time to reformat isn't working as of now. As far as I remember, there is no AHCI/ATA emulation option in my bios.

Could it be the bios itself? Is there a way to update them?

It's not a burned disc though. My Windows 7 disc used to work all the time, now that doesn't work either.

I decided to try disabling all other boot options besides my drive, giving my computer only that option. This was the result with the new drive. :??::fou:

My board is in the same range though I have it updated with the eufi bios. I can't recall problems with booting from the dvd rom before though. My bios shows it Px ATAPI and I think the model number of the dvd rom after. I'll have to see if I can find my manual to see if there was anything odd about the old bios.
