Not sure if Graphics card is cooling correctly

Hello everyone!

So I'm afraid that my graphic card's fans are being controlled by some other program that are not cooling it sufficiently. i have a HD 7970 and i used to remember it idling between like 30 and 40, and now i see that after 10 minutes of the computer being on (not even gaming, just like web browsing) i check the temperature and it's almost 80C. now the reason why i believe that some other program is controlling the fans is because when i put the computer into hibernate, after a few seconds after i hear the fans roar up to a faster speed.

My two programs that i believe could be the issue are corsair link and the cooling program that comes with ASUS ROG motherboards.

and sidenote: i am running one monitor and the HDMI out is connected to a tv, but i never have them on at the sametime.

so if anyone has had this problem/or has a fix/or ideas i will happily try them, i fear for the health of my graphics card :O

thanks in advance everyone!! (sorry for the long post)

Run an antivirus check. I've heard about a malware out there that uses GPUs to help cracking passwords, sneaky.

Apart from that, make sure you don't have Folding at Home, or SETI at Home, or bitcoin mining.

Run in safe-mode to see if problem persists (if it persists after AV and checking for those programs).

You really need to inspect those programs and find any GPU settings. I believe Corsair Link only applies to Corsair products, so unless you have a Corsair GPU (do those even exist?) it won't be controlling your GPUs fans.

So that leaves the cooling program that came with the motherboard, which I advise you to take a look at. Look in the settings, mainly those related to GPU and Fans.

Performance has dropped due to overheating.

Any modern processor (graphics cards included) have a throttling mechanism: since they are getting too hot (which means something is wrong with the cooling), the only way they can get cooler is by producing less heat. So they reduce their speed, becoming slower and slower as temperature rises.

This is a pain for anyone trying to game, but it's what's saving your GPU. If you hadn't seen it was overheating and it was still running at 100%, I wouldn't be surprised if it got well over 100ºC seeing as it reaches 80ºC at idle, burning your GPU.

The also unfortunate option is that the heat has already caused permanent irreversible damage. This will be verifiable if the problem persists after the cooling is fixed.

so it turns out i can control it in that corsair thing believe it or not. and it have it at 3000 RPM (which is like 100 or so below max) and its not going below 62C. also i do have an intake fan right next to the card to im not really sure whats going on.

When was the last time you opened up the computer and dusted it? Might be a good idea to help solve this issue.

Can you also verify that the fans are indeed spinning super fast? Should also be making quite some noise if it's spinning that fast.

yeah it mostly happened suddenly. but i was looking around some more and noticed two things:

the first thing being that i had manual fan control on in the catalyst control panel so i turned that off

and the second thing is i think whats the wrong, its says my gpu is constanly under a 90-96% load.

is there a way for my to find out what program is doing this?

What program you use to control your temps? If you re using the asus suite 2 forget it it s a piece of crap for that, don t trust it, corsair link is nice. I have an h80i and an asus sabertooth z77 and in asus suite I get warnings all the time saying my CPU is at 126 degrees Celsius, and other crazy values for voltage and temps. Try gpu z to watch your graphics card temps and usage, and uninstall asus suite 2
