Hi I just recently built a computer and I have been using piriforms speccy to take temperature readings of the CPU. When the computer is idling the temp is usually between 50 C-60 C. Is this unusual or is this normal for idling temperature? During gaming i have seen it hit from 70 C to 80 C. I have also gone in to the BIOS to check the temperature and it has been even more extreme at 90 C. That seems very high to me. The videocard temp is usually around 45 C. If anyone could give me advice that would be great.

That is indeed too high. You should be idling around the high 30's low 40's and under load you should be in the 60's if not the 50's. I would check 3 things.

1. Is the fan spinning up properly?
2. Is the heatsink on the fan level and pressed against the CPU?
3. Was the thermal paste applied properly?

I had a CPU go to 95 and my PC shut off because of a slight error in mounting the fan. Be sure it is very snug and the thermal paste is evenly distributed.

Edit: Also have you overclocked it?

I am using the stock fan for the cpu and it is spinning properly. The fan is plugged in to the CPU_FAN power on the motherboard. The stock fan came with thermal paste pre applied and the fan seems to be set properly. I have not changed any of the default settings in the BIOS so im pretty sure I am not overclocking. Any other ideas?

It is possible that your motherboard's temperature sensor could be faulty but usually when that happens you get crazy values like 160 degrees or -200 degrees. I assume the case has good airflow and the room you are in is not abnormally hot?

I think I solved the problem. I realized one of the fans clips was not fully fastened onto the motherboard. I got it to click and it seems to be idling around 35 C now. Thanks for your help.
