Hi

I've got a Laing D5 pump (same as the 655 rebranded models). I'm going to do a tear down soon and have stumbled across some pictures in D5 reviews where the impeller has been taken out of the metal can housing. I've never tried to take my pump apart, in fact I didn't know it was possible.

Does anyone know if you are supposed to remove the impeller for cleaning and does it come out easily?

Thanks in advance

You shouldn't need to disassemble the pump to clean it, if you're using proper additives then it should be pretty clean. Taking it apart is very simple if you want to check it, you just unscrew the front part of the housing until the unit comes out.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't talking about taking off the pump top I meant removing the impeller, the bit that actually spins. I found you can simply pull it out. It seems to be held in place by magnetism. The inside was nice and clean anyway. I'm now intrigued as to how exactly these D5 pumps work - I'll do some research for peace of mind.

Thanks again

The impeller rides on a ceramic bearing, the magnetic field holds it in alignment as well as providing the power field to make it spin.

Make sure when you reassemble the pump that the O-ring rubber seal is properly seated in the holding groove.

What prompted you to think it was dirty inside, did you find problems elsewhere?

Thanks for your reply. I wondered what the magnetic field was doing - it provides the force to spin the impeller. I wasn't taking the pump apart because of problems, just doing an annual clean. I hadn't realised before that you could gently pull the impeller clear.

Getting the pump back together is pretty easy. I use an EK aftermarket acetal top and the O ring is larger than the standard D5 O ring. It fits neatly on the front lip of the pump itself so is easy to position correctly. I've got the pump resting on a Shoggy sandwich to decouple it and it is silent so is working nicely.

Thanks again.
