Well I have an ASUS N61Vn laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 2.20Ghz x2 socket P and I'd like to upgrade it to something better, preferably quad-core.
I'd like something cheap and good.

Your laptop's support site lists no other compatible CPUs: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/list.aspx?SLanguage=...

However, the laptop came with these CPUs listed here: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/N61Vn/#specifi...
Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9000 : 2 GHz
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9600/P8800/P7450/T6600 : 2.8 GHz - 2.2 GHz

One thing to worry about is cooling. With the same cooler, a hotter CPU will overheat. Also, you motherboard may have a different max wattage for the CPU, than what is needed. Sometimes, BIOS will not even recognize the CPU, resulting in no POST.

Install CPU-Z, and provide your motherboard model.
