Hey everyone, I was wondering if a Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 would be good for playing basic games like minecraft and would it cope woth Adobe After Effects

I play games on my e7600 even manage to max some of it with a goo gpu.but it's already aging.i would go for an upgrade to the i5-i7 series for gaming.for minecraft it will run well.but,if u want to be able to play new games in the near future decently, upgrade ur mobo.

You might find this review to be interesting. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-wolfdale-yorkfield-comparison,3487.html

It compares budget Ivy Bridge(modern) processors against Core 2 Duo E8400(your CPU) and Core 2 Quad Q9550. The results are pretty interesting. It does pretty good considering it's almost a 6 year old chip. Especially if you overclock the CPU to 4GHz. See for yourself. It is time to upgrade to a more modern system but you don't have to do it immediately unless you want to play the most demanding games and use very CPU intensive software. The Core i7 920 is almost 5 years old now and I think that's crazy considering the CPU is still awesome.

yep.this is actually true considering i haven't upgraded my rig yet.hehe.i even play crysis 3 on medium with decent frame rate on my current rig.instead of upgrading my mobo i just bought myself a new AW 17 to replace my old m17x r3.

It should be fine for games. For example, I can play Skyrim on my C2D E6600. You can also use if for After Effects, but it may be a bit slow depending on what you are doing.

The only game you would have any significant performance penalty is Crysis 3. It actually needs a quad core CPU to get good performance (assuming the GPU is also up to the task).
