Hello,

I'm wondering if I can make a RAID 1 array on my Asus M5A87 motherboard without needing any additional hardware - on the Asus site it says it supports RAID 0, 1 etc, but I'm not entirely sure how to do it.

If you could let me know whether this is possible and how to do it I'd be very grateful!

Yes you can make a raid 1. The basic steps are
1. turn on raid in the bios
2. create a raid group and add drives to the group and set to raid 1
3. initialize(format) the raid
4. Install raid drivers

The Asus manual for the motherboard should show you specific steps(you should be able to download it from Asus site). Also you will have to wipe the drive, so any data on the drives will be lost. If you're installing Windows on to the raid you may have to install drivers during install.
