Both would work fine, it's a question of how much you want to spend/ what performance you want. If you want more performance, buy the 7950, if you want to save money, get the 7870 GHz Edition.

7950 hands down. you can find the 7950 on salev for 200 after rebates. the vapor x is sweet a have a 7970 vapor x and it stays really cool and you can overclock way higher than the normal cards but if you are going to buy a 7950 vapor x might as well get a sapphire 7970 oc for the same price

Cool. I was just not sure if the clock speed made a difference in the 7870. I'll probably stick with the 7950 then. Thanks

actually this one is the same exact price as the 7950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... the sapphire isnt on the good sale anymore for the 7970

what psu are you planning to get as well?

Also, do you know if the sapphire 7950 will fit in the cooler master haf 912 case? i.e. do i have to remove one of the hard drive bays?

It fits fine. I had an XFX one in smaller Rosewill case.
