Hi I recently got new 1600 ghz ram I originally had 1333ghz that the computer shop overclocked to 1600ghz is it safe to put in the new 1600ghz in as a straight swap thanks for any help

Solution
Drop in your ram, see if the computer boots. If it does 90% of the job is done. If you have problems, I think your best bet would probably be with the computer shop. I can give you rough instructions on how to mess around in the BIOS, but I would definitely not recommend fiddling if you're not comfortable with doing it.

Truthfully, you really shouldn't need any more than 8Gb for modern games for (probably) years to come.
yes, you can pull your old ram and insert new. you may have to enter the BIOS to make it run at 1600. usually it defaults to 1333.

guess I better add to reset cmos first. that will make the machines settings run stock so you won;t have any problems with the swap. you'll still have to enter the BIOS to make it run 1600.

Yes you should be fine, if I read this correctly, you had someone else overclock your computer so that your 1333 ram was effectively running at 1600. If that's the case adding another stick at 1600 or replacing your 1333 with a 1600 shouldn't cause any problems.

However, my comment would be that while swapping out the 1333 for 1600 would ensure your ram doesn't fail due to being overclocked, if your computer is running stable with the 1333 overclocked I would just leave it in. While the lifespan will be decreased, chances are you'll replace the entire computer before your RAM reaches end of life.

So long story short, unless your comp is unstable, I wouldn't fix what isn't broken.

I'm changing as I currently got 8gb zapplin 1333 ghz and purchased corsair 1600 8gb just to make my gaming pc ready for new games coming out such at call of duty / fifa ect. But the corsair ram I got was faulty so I sent it back and the sent me ballistix 16gb 1600ghz as a replacment so I want to put them in instead.
The computer shop overclocked the mother board I believe he said to run 1600 will I need to change bios if I do I don't know how so I will just leave it to the pc shop or is it easy?

You are wasting your money. Do you understand that you are replacing good working memory with basically exactly the same thing? To get any memory to tun at 1600, mhz, even the 1600 mhz memory you just bought, you must overclock it to that speed. You may want to research about memory a little more.

This is not entirely true. Yes, while many motherboards and cpus have the stock frequency set at 1066 or 1333, some do support 1600 right out of the box. As far as overclocking, that's moderately true, but it's more likely that you would just be enabling an X.M.P setting, which is a preconfigured setting that doesn't overclock the cpu but increases the ram clock.

As to whether or not he is wasting his money, he isn't. Having already purchased the ram, he made the choice to upgrade based on his idea of what he needs to improve in his computer. Therefore, it's not a waste of money in his eyes, and shouldn't be seen as one in yours (it is at the most, a useless opinion for the sake of this thread).

P1nnacle thanks for your reply I purchased 8gb but it come faulty so they sent me 16gb as a replacement that's the only reason I im putting 16gb in and I think I'm gonna take your advice and let the pc shop do it thanks for your time.

Jitpublisher I purchest 1600 ghz to upgrade because I was upgrading most of my pc to a gaming pc and people on this sight sujested I upgrade to 1600 instead of keeping the 1333 that's the only reason I upgraded and I wouldn't say I wasted my money as I payed £50 and ended up with 16gb or ballistix ram

As far as the bios goes, navigate through until you find an XMP profile option, and just enable it. I can't be very specific because of the differences in bios'. If you can't find an xmp profile option, you'll probably need to take it in to the shop so they can overclock it instead.
