My question is, if i get a motherboard that has a msata port on it and buy a 32 gb ssd and dedicate it to be only for cache, and then have a 256 ssd or perhaps two 128 ssd in raid, will the cache create a performance boost or just save the life of my ssd's by doing the reading and writing of the cache insted of the ssd doing the reading and writing.

Some of them are mSATA/mPCIe ports. In which I guess you could put a mPCIe card in there WiFi, perhaps.
If yours is of that type that goes both ways.

So if there is no gain, why have the port? is it there to just gain an extra drive bay?

not everyone has an ssd and when they were designed/conceived ssd's were more expensive they are there to support hdds
