Yet Another Stupid Question About a First Time Build...

Hi,

Here's what I'm working with...

Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Sabertooth Z87
Corsair H100i
EVGA GeForce GTX780 SuperClocked w/EVGA ACX Cooler
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W 80 PLUS Gold
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL9 @1.5V
Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB SATA 6Gbps SSD
7200RPM HDD
DVD Burner
NZXT Phantom 410

Here's my problem:

I was going to use the fan controller on the Phantom 410 but it uses a P4 (3 male pins. looks like 4 but one is missing) power connection and my Cooler Master PSU doesn't have that P4 connection, the connections on that are 5 female holes. Sorry I don't know all the terminology, I'm working on it. My mobo doesn't have a P4 connection either.

So ok, I guess I can't use the fan controller.... no big deal.

All the fans have 3-pin female ends and the sockets on my sabertooth z87 are 4-pin male.

I'm confused by this. Can I use these 3-pin fans or do I have to go out and buy new ones that have 4-pins?

Thanks !!!

Solution
There are no stupid questions for the first time build (only all the ones following). Yes, your 3 pin fans will work just fine, you just don't have the PWM option.

Sorry but what's PWM? Does that mean I can't use the mobo software to controller how fast my fans go?

Also, how do I know which 3 of the 4 male pins to use against my 3? Thanks!

Yes PWM is the line that lets your motherboard control fan speed. That feature will be unavailable to you. As for which three, there are two bumps that stick out which line up with a tab that comes off the board. They only go on one way.

Dang, that stinks! So they will just run full blast all the time?

If thats the case, then I'll finish this and then look for new fans. Can you recommend good ones? It would be cool to have blue LED's but not needed. I would need a 140mm for the front, 120mm for the back and a 120mm for the side.

Any idea why my PSU wouldnt have that power connection needed for the fan controller?

ok, maybe youll think twice about that whole "no stupid question thing".

Turns out I have an adaptor that came with my power supply. Here's a pic.

So I use the adapter, I can use the fan controller right?

Are you talking about a molex connector or the floppy connector (molex is the large 4 pin while floppy is the small 4 pin) As far as I can see it looks like you need a molex to power the fan controller and the 4 additional 3 pin connectors are for your fans.

Yea, molex. Sorry, I'm not up to date with computer terms. This is my first build. Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it
