So I used to use a 5-port workgroup switch at my school so I could use my computer as well as my xbox on the same line (come to think of it, when I rented an apartment off-campus the switch worked fine there too). It's a common thing, and it's very convenient. I live in another state now on an internship with a host family, and I have only one port in my room again.

I put the switch in today, and I discovered that while my xbox will go through the switch and receive an internet connection, my computer refuses to pass through the switch. Whether it's by itself or with the xbox, no matter what cable I use (including the ones that work with the xbox), my computer will not register activity on the switch display panel LEDs.

I also noticed another very strange thing. In the past when I've used the switch, the top and bottom LEDs ("Link/Act" & "Full/Col," leaving out the "100") have lit up while the computer was off (I think it was those two... some did, in any case). All three lit up while it was on. As of now, those LEDs light up when I disable my "Ethernet" (which is listed as different than my "Local Area Connection," though both are for hard lines?), it acts like my computer used to act when turned off, lighting up those LEDs. When my adapter is ON, it turns those lights OFF. Why the heck would it register activity of any sort with the adapter disabled and register no activity with the adapter enabled?!

*EDIT*

The switch in particular is a Cisco Linksys EZXS55W Ver. 4.2

I believe that the family's router I'm running through is also a Linksys, but I'm not positive. He has a second router set up as a wireless access point upstairs near my room.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. My network adapter is built into the MoBo rather than being a separate card. I'm also running Windows 8, so the setup process might be different than you have in mind. Here is a detailed list of my system specs.

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77I-Deluxe
CPU: Intel unlocked Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz
CPU Fan: Corsair all-in-one liquid cooled (model?)
Graphics Card: ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (MoBo alt: Intel HD Graphics 4000)
RAM: Corsair Dominator 16GB (2x8GB) @ 1600Hz 9-9-9-?
Bootup Drive: Corsair GS SSD
OS: Windows 8 Pro (64-bit)
PSU: Corsair AX650
Optical Disk drive: ASUS DRW-24B1ST c

*EDIT*

The Linksys router is the access point, and the router running the signal from the modem is a D-Link wireless router. I'm currently running my computer off the WAP so my xbox has the hard line. Some fiddling with the Linksys has yielded a better connection today, so it's not as vital to get the switch figured out, but the wireless speed is still only about 3/5 of the hard line, whereas it used to be almost the same. For that reason, it would still be much preferred to be hard lines all the way.
