A very good day to all,

I have been looking through the threads and doing some searches on the forums for a similar problem but to no avail. My problem description is as below.

I own a pair of AMD Radeon 6990s and have been running them in quadfire on my Asus Maximus Iv Extreme motherboard. Until recently, when I went into BIOS, I found that instead of the usual PCI-E bandwidth of x8 for each of my cards, one of them is running at X1.

Here is where it gets interesting. I loaded up GPU-Z, and checked my cards but found that all cards are running at PCI-E 2.0 x16. Suspecting that there may be conflicting information, I proceeded to perorm troubleshooting on both cards by testing them individually. The findings of the troubleshooting are posted below :

AMD 6990 (Card 1 @ PCI-E Slot 1)
BIOS reads as x16
GPU-Z reads as x16
Render performance done with not so much as a hitch

AMD 6990 (Card 1 @ PCI-E Slot 3)
BIOS reads as x8
GPU-Z reads as x16
Render performance done with not so much as a hitch

AMD 6990 (Card 2 @ PCI-E Slot 1)
BIOS reads as x1
GPU-Z reads as x16
Render performance was choppy

AMD 6990 (Card 2 @ PCI-E Slot 3)
BIOS reads as x1
GPU-Z reads as x16
Render performance was choppy

Checks with XFX and doing their prescribed remedy (reseat the card and cleaning the PCI-E contacts)yielded no difference in the second card. The 2nd card is stuck in x1. Also, I find it weird that GPU Z would report my card performance as X16 even though it is in the third PCI-E slot.

Please see my computer specifications below for further information.
Asus Maximus IV Extreme
Intel Core i7-2600K
AMD Radeon HD 6990 quadfire configuration
1TB HDD (Can't remember which brand)
16 GB RAM (Can't remember which brand)
Cooler Master 1200W Power Supply Unit

My warranty for the cards have expired just a few months ago and thus, am unable to RMA it. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I think that is all the information you guys may need, do let me know if you require further information. As I'm not at my home computer typing this out, I regret to inform you that I would not have any pictures to describe the problem.

I would like to seek the community's advise on whether my card can be salvaged or should I use it to build a new house. Thank you and have a nice day.

Hi kookie3010.

I ran 2 versions, I was running version 13.4 when I detected the anomaly. I then upgraded to the 13.10 beta drivers but no dice.

Yes, I have updated my bios and am currently on 3604. I always made it a point to do a manual system check whenever I update my bios to make sure my settings were not changed. Prior to the update and after the update until the time of detection, both cards were at x8 on the first and third slots.

Regarding in game performance, individually, when using card 1, I do not experience any problems playing my games at their current settings. There is a noticeable performance slowdown when using the 2nd card.

Hope the information helps. Cheers!

Have u test using only the 2nd card without the 1st card in slot?might be a bad card.

Yes, I have tested the 2nd card in both, the first and third slots by itself. It shows up as x1 native.

Warranty just expired (murphy's law). Any suggested home solutions (I'm desperate) I'm willing to try. All except probably baking my card in an oven (Read that somewhere)

Haha.baking it in the oven would just make u spend money on the oven.i suggest getting a replacement for it if u still intend on going with the same dual card setup.for the mean time you will be good running on just one card since its a very good card even on its own.maybe its time to switch to a 7990 or gtx 780:p

Where I come from, those cards would basically drain me of an entire month's worth of salary. Anyways, I thank you for taking the time to answer my queries. Maybe it's time to start saving up for the AMD 9000 series (Praying for 9990). Cheers and have a good day.

I'm leaving this thread open to anyone else who can provide suggestions. Thanks all for reading!
