Video problem or...

Hello, I have a Acer Aspire 4540. AMD Athlon II Dual Core m300. 4gb Ram and ran both win 7 x32 and 64 with same problem. The laptop will every now and then shut down. Mainly when I am playing videos only. I have the core temp app running to keep an eye on it and what I can tell you is this.

When I'm just sitting on a regular page or even right now as I'm typing this it is anywhere from 74 to 83 degrees. Mainly stays in the 76-79 range.

As soon as I click on a video, any video temp just goes up like it's on fire. 82,83,84,85 all the way up to 99 before i get scared and exit the page with the video. As soon as I exit the page with the video it goes down as fast as it went up. It only shut off on me twice in the past 3 days and each time was when I was downloading all the updates. That's when I downloaded the core temp app and started testing the temp during video clips. But no more updates to install so can't test the temp during that.

Now when I got this thing it was filthy. I literally jumped in the shower after taking it apart and cleaning it, felt filthy. I got most the dust off the board from what I can tell and cleaned the fan etc but I am sure I couldn't have gotten all the fan since I didn't take it apart or anything.

My question is could this be just a simple fan. heat sink and thermal paste fix from it just being so damn dirty it needs new ones. Or is the fact that it does this during video clips a sign that it is dead? Is 76-79 degrees crazy for just sitting around on a page? Thanks

Solution
That's pretty darn hot, especially for a mobile cpu. if the thermal paste has dried, cracked and completely flaked off. and contact with the heat pipe is loose, i could see those temps. the cooling system shouldn't ever need replacing, but a refresh is good idea if it's been super dirty, crack the whole machine in half and clean it out in depth, the pipe, the fan, put the grease on and such. Make sure you have correct drivers installed as using less than optimal drivers can lead to higher utilization (which yields higher temps)

Ok thanks for the help. I looked up the parts and they all seem pretty cheap new so I will try that and report back sometime next week. Just so I know, what is the normal temp I want to be at? Thanks

It varies from laptop to laptop, they all have different fans, heatpipes, and cpu's. I don't know much about your CPU, but 99c is pretty dang hot and probably right around (or above) the max for your cpu...unless this is in Fahrenheit? in which case 99 is actually a really good temp.

Nope, it's C not F. But I did just notice one thing, and it could be a fluke so who knows but I just deleted an extra wifi driver that wasn't in use and it's now idling around the 69-73 instead of upwards around 80. So maybe that's a good sign between that and getting the new fan, thermal etc.

I cannot begin to explain how dusty it was. Like she used her dog to prop it up for her for 5 years straight. It literally had these very tiny white not sure if they were like dust mites or what. But as soon as the top palmrest came off I seen 2 dart across the MB. Cleaned it as best as possible, then cleaned the entire room I was in then showered. That bad....

lol. exactly what I did. took all the plastic and soaked them in the basement sink, wiped the motherboard down, blew it out. then let all the parts sit in a room for about a week. That's why I said even though the fan looks cleaner there is no way I got it all. So ordering new ones. I'm starting to get the itches again just talking about this damn thing.

Thanks again for the help will see how the new parts help and let you know once they arrive.
