Laptop won't start up after adding RAM

A while ago I decided I wanted to add more RAM to my current laptop, a Gateway NV5470u that's running Windows 7. After adding the 1 GB of RAM, my laptop refused to start up. I don't remember if there were any flashing lights, but it doesn't even seem to acknowledge the fact that I have pressed the power button, A red light does come on, however, when I plug in the charger, but I can get to further than that. It still refuses to start up even after I have removed the RAM.

Help? My brother says to just give up hope on it, but I'd rather not...
Thanks! :)

I have, I took out the RAM that I had added, there was already a 1 GB stick in there. It still doesn't do anything at all.

Yes it worked fine before. After having it plugged in for a while, the charging light has gone from red to blue. If the cause of the problem was a bad battery, wouldn't it still be able to boot up off of external power?

But the external power is running through the battery...

Have you taken out the battery and unplugged the power? Leave the device without battery or power alone for a couple of minutes (honestly, around 30 seconds should be fine), and then plug it all back in and see if anything has changed. This is all, of course, with the new RAM removed, and the old RAM replaced in its original place.

man try taking the CMOS battery from the mobo and changing the original 1 gb ram slot, the start it. if it works reinstall the battery after shutdown and configure your bios settings. if you're saying that the laptop does not start at all then you should take it apart and test the power button on the mobo, sometimes it gets stuck and will not press, if that is not the case then you may have somehow damaged the power circuit.
