Here's my dilemma. The processor that came with this machine is an Intel Xeon E-1620. I want to swap out the processor for an Intel i7-3820 to do some testing. I put the i7 into the socket, and all that came back was a series of beeps. Problem is, my boss did the swap and I have no clue what the beep codes were and he doesn't remember. Without swapping them again, is there any reason why they shouldn't swap out? It's a UEFI machine running Windows 8. If nothing else I'll just talk to HP.

Solution
The problem is the on the HP PC BIOS, usually C602 chipset is compatible with the i7-3820 with BIOS update, but I think HP don't have that BIOS update so that they are compatible. You can try to talk to HP to see what they say.

It is possible that the BIOS of the machine does not support the I7 CPU without a BIOS flash. Look on the MB manufacturer's website to see if there is a BIOS update that will support it.

Boy, I'm 0 for 2 today! giving the same answer only after someone else has already answered.

Well I was thinking the same thing you guys suggested, but I hate to talk to them just because I don't know how they'll want to respond when I tell them I'm taking out their CPU. Oh well, nevertheless it needs done. When I hear from them I will update the thread.

Yes, those oem pc maker like dell and hp, they lock the bios functions so that you can't oc or something else. I think they want to the buyer to use minimum functions so that they can have less problem and custom supports.
I also think you should build your own PC. That is best way to go.

Well seeing as how they are for work and I have about 150 other computers to manage, building a desktop every time a design engineer needs one will be a waste of my time. I was wanting to put an i7 in a Z620 to test it against a Xeon E-1620 for design in Solidworks.
