I learned that the problem occurred as a result of an update from MS - Update for MS Office 2010 (KB2589275). I tried to uninstall it yesterday, but for some reason was unsuccessful. I tried again this am. Happy to report that the problem seems to now be resolved. We shall see... But VERY Frustrated yesterday. Wasted many valuable hours seeking a solution to my problem. Wish MS could avoid this...I am sure many others encountered similar problem.

PS: To answer your question re: symptoms. All my office documents appeared on my desktop as orange icons. I was unable to open them or create any new ones.
