Here's my system setup

i7 4770k, overclocked
2 x 7970s, overclocked
MSI Mpower mobo
2 x 8GB GSkill 2133
Seasonic X-1250

Other components using power: D5 Vario pump, 1 SSD, 2 Caviar Blacks, fan controller, 4 fans.

The problem I'm having is the Seasonic X-1250 seems to be overheating the past few days. I've been using the PSU pretty regularly (lots of gaming, benching, etc) since July when I bought it. Now, when I'm stressing my system in any way, like playing BF3, my PSU powers off after 20 - 40 minutes of playing, then after maybe 5-10 seconds, it kicks back on and my computer reboots.

When I felt the housing of the PSU, it was pretty hot to the touch -- not so hot that I had to immediately withdraw my hand, but hot enough that holding my fingers on it for more than a few seconds got quickly uncomfortable. I don't know how hot they are normally supposed to feel, though. I had the PSU bottom mounted, fan drawing air from the bottom. There were no obstructions blocking airflow.

I decided to run the PSU outside the case and monitor the fan activity. Turns out, the fan is not even spinning. No matter what amount of load I put on it, the fan doesn't turn. The PSU continues to overheat but doesn't seem to be shutting off as quickly outside the case (I need to test it for a longer amount of time). There is a hybrid switch on it. Doesn't matter whether it's on hybrid or normal, fan doesn't move the slightest.

This is my first Seasonic PSU, which I was told was the best. Disappointing.

Is it common for fans to fail? Shouldn't it be spinning up with that kind of load?

Ok, first things first. Why are you continuing to run it until it shuts off. Sooner or later its gonna really go out and maybe take half your components with it. The fan isnt spinning, either send it back for warranty work or buy a new PSU. I wouldnt suggest anyone take apart their PSU to work on it. It is very dangerous unless you know what you are doing. But use some common sense and fix the issue, dont keep running it til it overheats and shuts off.

Can't return it now. Will have to RMA -- of course I'm not going to spend money on a new one. Very sad that a Seasonic crapped out that quickly. Not a good first impression.

BTW, I didn't open the PSU. That would be stupid.

Maybe you have to many things connected to the same rail.

the XFX review below uses the same internals as the seasonic

"I use a SunMoon SM-8800 load tester to put artificial loads on power supplies. Different cables plug into different connectors on the front of the load tester and each connector is assigned a load.

With a single +12V rail power supply, I usually don't pay too much mind to what plugs in where. I typically just plug in as many connectors as possible into the front of my load tester and fire it up. But for this power supply, I couldn't do a full load and was wondering if the power supply was really a 1250W or if it was tripping off because of the high temperatures. I even ran my tests at room temperature and the power supply still shut down.

XFX ensured me that the power supply should do 1250W without issue and sent me a second unit. I plugged the second unit into the load tester and experienced the same problem. At high loads, the power supply kept shutting down.

So what's the deal? Well, it turns out that EasyRail isn't EasyRail after all. This power supply actually has four +12V rails. The way I hooked up the cables to the power supply, and the way the +12V is distributed was causing the OCP to trip. I was plugging the 4+4-pin into my load tester and the 4+4-pin shares a +12V rail with the 24-pin connector; so putting a load on both of these connectors was putting the total load on one +12V rail.

After some emails and trial and error (like, a whole day of trial and error), it turns out the DC output table should look something like this:"
