Hello,

I have been saving up for a new build and am finally finalizing the components. I want to use the new Ivy-Bridge E processor in my build. I have done my research and have heard that you have to flash your bios on your motherboard to make the new ivy-bridge e processors work. However everything that i have heard is people doing this when they are upgrading and they already have a sandy-brigde e processor and x79 motherboard.

Will I still have to flash my new motherboard if i am dropping a new ivy-bridge e processor in it? and if i do is it even possible, since the motherboard will not recognize the ivy-bridge e processor from my understading?

Most of the Asus x79 motherboards have an onboard utility which allows for the firmware to be upgraded without even having a CPU installed in the socket.

Most of the time having an "unsupported" CPU will simply cause the new CPU to fail to operate optimally, not fail to operate at all.

so since ivy-bridge e and sandy-bridge e use the same socket and chipsets your saing i should be able to get it to at least post? Cause from there i know i could easily flash the bios

Usually that's the case
