My system refused to boot after replacing the thermal gel on my CPU. I could get as far as UEFI, which could see the SSD I was running Linux on, but for some reason could not start it up (the message was along the lines of "Could Not Find Bootable Partition"). That and the CPU was running unusually hot, in the 53 range while idling. So I opened up the case to see if anything was obviously wrong.

Other than one fan being screwed in backwards by accident, there was nothing obvious. So I closed the case and turned it back on.

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

I heard the sounds of booting, and toggling numlock showed power going to the USB keyboard, but there was nothing appearing on the screen regardless of whether I connected it to the Graphics Card or the Motherboard. I tried clearing the CMOS via a button on the back, but no dice.

Static damage is a possibility but, as I was wearing a grounding strap and live in hot-n-humid Southern China, I don't think it's terribly likely.

My question is: What should I be looking for when I crack open the case again? Checking the thermal compound for spill is the next obvious step, but as an intermediate at computer repair, what else do you think it could be? Does it sound like a problem you've face before?

My System (Approximately 2.5 years old):
Motherboard: Asrock Z68 Extreme3 gen3
CPU: i5 2500k
Cooling: Corsair H60 Hydro series
SSD: 128GB Samsung 830 Series
HD: 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green
PSU: Corsair Gs800
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr II w/ NVIDIA G580
RAM: 2x4GB Ripjaws X
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
OS: Ubuntu Server

Thank you for any guidance you can offer.
