My suggestion would be to have an LGA 2011 system as this has the best possibilities for expansion. The LGA 2011 CPU's have double the memory bandwidth of LGA 1155 and 1150 and support 40 PCIe lanes instead of 26 or 32. Also, the LGA 2011 will allow an upgrade to Intel 6-core Extreme CPU's like the i7-4790X.
Here's an idea that is made to be a very solid performer and with strong expansion possibilities. This is a bit over the budget, but it seems more economical to have the GTX 770 with 4GB at $460 than to spend $400 for the 2GB version and then add a second 2GB in SLI later (=$800) to have 4GB total. Of course, SLI is faster because there are two GPU's, but I feel that starting with the 4GB version means that the second GPU, 8GB more RAM, and possibly an Extreme CPU could wait until the 1.5 year upgrade point.>
