Toshiba usb HDD 320gb not connecting

My toshiba usb hdd 320gb can not be recognized by my pc. I 've connected it to any usb port(including usb 3.0) , the blue light works, I can hear the disk spinning but there is no connection sound to my pc. I also tried to connect it to the laptop but I get the same result.

I have seen this exact problem with a student where I work. Go to Disk Management and see if it shows up. The MBR of his disk was corrupt and could not retrieve any data. Make sure that an external drive is not your only back-up.

You mean that I all my data is gone??? I have over 5Gb of music and staff in there and I would not like to lose all those things....
What did your student did???
