Hey guys, I installed a new ssd, followed a tutorial on lifehacker website about installing an ssd without reinstalling windows , and I was on a step that told me to format my hdd but windows said I couldn't. Why couldn't I? All I did was backup all my hdd data on an external drive and also clone my hdd to my ssd. I didn't have multiple partitions(just in case that's a relevant fact). What do I do at this point? When I tried to boot from my ssd it was insanely slow. Back to my question: how do I know my ssd is working properly? Thanks

I am running in that mode. Also, what do you mean by partition offset?

If the offset is divisible by 4 (KB) then you are ok, Crystaldisk would flag that otherwise. Simple answer is that because of how SSD's write data if it's not aligned, then the controller has to clear 2 full blocks of data before writing instead of just 1. This cuts your throughput in half and also will reduce the life of the drive. If you formatted with win7 it sets the offset at 1024 MB by default.

Cloning works perfect for me. I keep a fully updated version of windows plus a few programs that I use on an HDD. I constantly push the limits with my OC and do things that I probably shouldn't. Anyways I get to the point that I have corrupted the OC beyond repair sometimes. It's all a learning thing. Well I just clone my OC from the HDD back to the SSD and all is well again. Then I load the important data that I have backed up and I am back in business again. Another thing, before cloning, I update windows on the HDD if there are any updates and there usually are some. Cloning saves a lot of time reloading everything from scratch. Windows is always activated too after the cloning. I luv it!

Cloning like that will not work so flawlessly if you are switching computers or mother boards.
