Lag between router and computer

Hello,

Our home network router, a HG533, randomly decides to create spikes in delay between itself and the computers on the network.

I believe the issue is between the router and the house computers and not the modem.

I have run the ping command from my computer to the router and it shows times when the response is really delayed or even timed out.

Please let me know how I can resolve the issue or if I need to contact the ISP to replace the router.

If you need any more information I will be happy to supply what I can.

Thank you,
Devroz

you can try a firmware update, that sometimes helps. if its provided by your ISP, then it's probably done automatically from them (unless its a crap ISP). So best bet is to cal your ISP, have them troubleshoot, and if its not resolved, request a new router.

Figured it would probably need to be replaced.

The firmware updating is done by the ISP and it is on the latest firmware as far as I can tell.

I was thinking perhaps the wifi channel or amount of different devices connected may be causing issues.

Thanks for the reply.

I am going to bet this is on wireless. If it is on wired the router has a serious issue that is overloading the CPU or you have massive amounts of traffic.

This is extremely common problem on wireless. Unlike wired where you lose data that gets corrupted in wireless the chipset will attempt to resend the data for some period of time. This resending appears to increases in latency.

So it is likely it is interference but fixing it can be quite the challenge. You either need to find and eliminate the interference which is unlikely or hope to find a radio frequency that has less. Unfortunately with all the wireless in use everyone is using everything and stomping all over each other.

Seems I missed the most important point, yes it is wireless.

I tried a few different channels with the wifi but they all still lagged me.

And with playing games and watching streams, it is more than an inconvenience to not have a stable connection.

I appreciate the help.
