I have a wireless receiver to use a 360 controller and PC and was working flawlessly for a couple of weeks. I stopped using it for 2 weeks, I just didn't fell like playing games and my classes had just started. Recently started playing again and the receiver does not want to connect to any controller I try using. I've installed and uninstalled the drivers for it multiple times. Windows can't auto solve it. The receiver keeps coming up as a unknown devices even though it was working fine before my break. I did manually show windows where the driver was located. Doing this, windows recognized it a the "Xbox 360 wireless receiver" but it failed to install the driver.
"Windows found the driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it", "The system can not find the file specified".

Going back into Device Manager, the device is listed again as unknown even if it was labeled during the update, and I get error code 28, "drivers are not installed"

I've manually installed the drivers off of MS's website, no dice. Manually located the driver for Windows and I get the aforementioned problem.

Any help?

Since the last time it worked, have you installed any new hardware or software such as a wireless keyboard or mouse? And you are pressing the sync button on the controller after pressing the button on the receiver?

The last thing I got for my PC was a external HDD for data backups back in late August (WD my passport, I did install the software that came with it but never found any reason to use it), during that time the receiver was still working. And of course I"m pressing the sync buttons on both the controller and receiver. I've done the receiver first then controller and vice versa.

A USB external HDD? Try it without the external HDD.
If not, try another USB port.
If not, try re-installing your USB drivers. I had a similar issue with my PC with my wired 360 controller after getting a new Logitech keyboard and mouse with the USB unifying receiver.
If you have restore on, try rolling the system back to August when it was working.

All of that has been attempted albeit unsuccessful (should have mentioned it earlier)

I got around to fixing it. When prompted, instead of having Windows looking for the drivers in the folder I selected, I tried to select the driver manually while skipping all of Windows's warnings. After skipping all those and manually finding and force installing the driver I have, it worked.

Now all I need is for a mod to close/marked as solved this thread
