Hi.
Since I've been running out of space due to too much games, I bought more DVD-Rs to backup stuff as I always do. Last time I backed up stuff was over 8 months ago.

So, I put in my DVD-R, nothing happens. If I try to open the "CD-Drive" in computer, it says,
"Windows can't read the disc in Drive G:\
Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using".

Meaning it DOES read that there IS a disc in it. This message does not show when DVD drive is empty. Also, I'm pretty sure that it used to say something like "DVD/DVDR Drive" or something and not "CD drive" like right now.

My DVD drive model is TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222AB ATA Drive

The DVD-Rs read fine on 3 other laptops I checked. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I've been following those "Troubleshooter" steps but I don't think it should work because according to my computer, I have a CD drive, not a DVD one. So, obviously, it would download CD-drive drivers instead of DVD ones.

I tried to download Microsoft FixIt but I can't download it because of timeouts. Samsung's website does not have anything except manual. I tried updating firmware from FirmwareHQ but it didn't help.

I'm pretty sure the driver is at fault. Are there any generic DVD drivers I can use? I do not have the box or anything since my father brought this PC and did not bring any CDs/manuals/boxes with the components.

When I had Windows 7 before, it was fine, then I upgraded to Windows 8, it was fine there as well. Now I downgraded to windows 7 again for Battlefield 3 purposes. I think that's when this happened because this is the first time I'm trying to write something after re-installing Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

To troubleshoot the drive, I'd try to boot from a bootable DVD just to make sure it's working. If it's OK you can eject the disk and hold down the power button to shut down the PC. If you are correct and it's a Windows error, try to uninstall the driver in device manager and re-install it. A system restore might be tried if that doesn't work.

This will also let you determine if it's a bad drive (it won't boot a DVD)
