Hi all
Well I splashed out on some new bits for my pc. here is the list

i7 4770k
asus maximus6 impact motherboard
8 gb of vengance ram 1666mz
evga gtx 6800 oc graph card
1000w cosiar psu
The big question is the cooler I have it is a coolit freezone elite 2

I used the asus software for a fast overclock and it is running stable at 4.6 gz. When i run total war Rome 2 for 10 mins the elite goes nuts "and loud" and drops the cpu temp from 80 degrees down to the 50's.The room temp is only 15-17 atm and I am worried about running this in summer with say a 20 + degree temp.

Is this cooler safe to use with the 4770k since its 3 years + old or should i upgrade for safety? any thought + advice will be greatly appreciated.

The drop from 80c to 50c is when the cpu goes past the overheat threshold and the cpu gets throttled. I'm pretty sure with anything over 4.3ghz on a 4770k it's recommended to use water cooling or high end air coolers such as the massive phanteks/noctuas.

I think you should try overclocking on your own. Software overclocks are notoriously bad and almost always leave you with the wrong settings. Chances are, the software gave you some super high voltage or made some other setting too high, causing the high temps and eventually throttling. You should be able to hit 4.5ghz with an average air cooler. I personally haven't read too many good reviews for the coolit freezone elite 2 - maybe its cooling method isn't up to par. The 4770k is known to get pretty hot when overclocked. I would try and get a fan/heatsink that's either the hyper 212 evo or something good from noctua.

Well I bought a corsair h100i cooler togo with this system.my case is a coolmaster haf 922. The firm that was fitting the system together said the h100i could not fit into the case hence they put the elite back on the CPU. Reckon I should buy a new case or go with a new cooler ?

Well after 2hrs of no stop rome 2 the fan hit 100% when the cpu hit 60 degrees and it drops to 40 degrees with in a few seconds seems to get back to the 60 with in 6-7 mins and then the cycle repeats its self. Thats withthe chip running at 4.4 on a 1.2 voltage so not sure if the cooler is working as intended or if its having a hard time

60c is well below overheat threshold, that's set around 85c by default. Is the game stuttering or slowing down when it happens? It might be that the cooling is working fine and it's being allowed to creep up over time then being cooled back to 40c.

No stutter at all in rome 2 or tomb raider . I just ran the tome raider benchmark with everything maxed got an avg of 52 fps when i dropped out to the desktop to see what the temp was it had got to 73 degrees.

Ok for some reason now the cooler is going 100% every 5 mins in any game. I think i need to fine a good water cooler that will fit into my haf 922 case as I have very little confidence in the elite since it is 3+ years old I dont think its up to the job I would like it to manage any more . Any suggestions much appreciated and ty to all how have answered so far :)
