I just got a new laptop running Windows 8, old laptop was Windows 7. My WD My Book makes a sound when i plug it in but does not show up in My Computer, but DOES show up in hardware and printers in control panel. I went to the WD site (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?wdc_lang=en&fid=wdsfMyBook) and downloaded the SES driver but still nothing. Is there anything i forgot to do? The hard drive came with software but i dont have the CD anymore.

Solution
Do as above suggested. I have seen cases were the drivers were detected correctly but for some reason Windows did not assign a drive letter to it. In that case it would not show up in My computer so while in disk management check for that also.

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm going to post this anyway just in case it turns out to be useful to someone else.

A recent Microsoft update to Win 7 (thanks, Microsoft) made SMB 2.0 the default for Win 7. I lost connectivity to my MyCloud device recently, even though it had been working for over a year.
Here's a link to the real fix:
http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/242602-cant-connect-samba-share-win-7-ultimate-64-bit.html

The same concern may also exist in Win 8, 8.1, and 10 --- although I haven't checked them yet myself.
Note that after you take the action in the link you'll need to stop/restart the 'Workstation" service on your PC to make it take effect.
