Reducing your bandwidth speed intentionally

Hi All,

It's been a week since I had my DSL installed but I am having a bit of a problem. Because my speed is not consistent, I called my ISP and told them about it. They said they will conduct a line test and will change my profile in the server depending on the results. What happened is they reduced my speed of about 20% of it's original speed. My ping also increased.

My question: Is there a way to decrease the results that I am getting from speedtest.net to about 20% or even just 10%. Probably tweaking the LAN adapter or something in the registry? They said they will bring over a technician to see the actual result and he will then coordinate to our ISP. If I can do that, they would see and probably adjust my speed up to 20% which will bring back it's original speed.

Thanks in advance.

That's typical of ADSL interleaving. If the connection issues went away, then it's doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing. If you want them to remove it you'll need to call them up and ask. You can ask them to send out a technician to look at the local box as well to see if there's anything that he or she can do. Some ISPs will do this.

The technician will not look at your PC. He or she will simply disconnect your home network from your modem, attach his or her laptop to your modem and test it directly.

Yes, I was thinking about that too but when they initially sent a technician here, he just went to speedtest.net and checked my speed. Tried a little tweaking on my system and then called someone and he adjusted it.

That's typical. They didn't slow down your speed, they almost certainly just enabled ADSL interleaving. This is an added layer of error correction to reduce dropped packets at the expense of some throughput and latency. If you were to do what you suggest the tech would just disconnect your PC, hook his own up to the modem and call your bluff.

Protip: don't try and play mind games with your service provider. They're not stupid.

Yeah I guess I don't really have a choice. It's just that after I complained about the intermittent connection, they lowered down my upload, download, and my ping went up as well.
