I'm looking at a new build. I have another question posted about the build in general but I want to know more about the cooler. I've been researching for hours. From what I can tell, the H90 and the X40 are pretty close in performance.

I'm looking at getting a Haswell 4770k and am planning on overclocking it. I've never overclocked before and would like to play around with it. I do a fair amount of video encoding and Photoshop work. Although, I'm not a really heavy photoshop user.

From what I have seen online is that the air coolers are pretty good. 240mm air coolers better than 140mm but I'm working within a budget, and since I don't spend all my time video encoding or photoshop I thought that it might be okay.

Currently newegg has the Corsair H90 on special for $69.99. I think that is a pretty good price and while some have recommended the Thermaltake Macho Rev. A (HR-02), it seems that for $10 more I can go with the H90 and have a lot more space in the case.

I run virtualbox with a Windows 7 guest all day with my host machine as Linux mint 15. I Photoshop / inside Virtualbox and the video encoding in the host.

Do you think this will be sufficient?

I have to agree. If you're not going to do heavy overclocking (no higher than 4.5 or 4.6ghz), then just stick with an air cooler. It'll be cheaper and quieter than liquid cooling. I highly recommend the coolermaster hyper 212 evo or any highly rated model from noctua.

from what I've read the 4770k won't go past 4.5ghz consistently stable. I was thinking of going to 4.5 IF it won't kill the processor.

I want the system to last me 4 or 5 years. will oc'ing shorten the life if I keep it cool?

Noise is less of a factor for me. I do t want it to sound like a jet engine all day. but it is in my office, under my desk so I am not sleeping I. the same room or anything.

my main concern is price for performance. I thought that getting the H90 for $70 bucks might give me the best pperformance for that price.

if there are two equals then I would pic .the quietest.
