Are you inclined to buy an AMD card? Just asking, I AM NOT A NVIDIA FANBOY, but i just try to help people take the right decision. I heard several problems with people using hds 7970, 7990. About your question, what card do you have now? Can you complete with it 6 months or so? Maybe after consoles release with some time, AMD or Nvidia will design a new architecture that will be futureproof more than ever.

Personlly, I would wait if possible. I don't remember exactly when the 8xxx series is due out (sometime early next year??) but I know the nvidia 8xx series is due out soon, so you may see a price drop in older GPUs.

I didn't mean to wait for the new series(of either amd or ncidia) for the price drop. I meant maybe they will release a new card, which wont be high end, as the gtx 760 (FOR NOW) that has a new architecture that will be more capable of playing games better than older series 6xx/7xx, specially that new consoles are coming out soon. About your current gpu, its not that bullshit but yea, it not even very good. I guess that with this gpu, your cpu and psu wont be that good.. Can you mention the rest of your rig, it might not be able to handle a new gpu anyway. In that case, i will recommend trying to hold on for sometime and build a new rig after consoles and these new gen releases.

HD 5850 is actually quite powerful, it can still play latest games at decent settings. I would suggest that you wait for the 8000 series. You can refer here and scroll down a little to see how powerful the 8000 series are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_8000_Series

However, if you would like to try Nvidia, the GeForce 800 series will feature an integrated ARM Chip making it more independent from the main CPU. It's also worth the wait.
