I bought an OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W power supply in Jan 2012 and an XFX Radeon HD 6850 with it.

At the time I was running an old 775 pin motherboard+processor combo and everything worked fine. Then after a while my motherboard died and for a couple of months my machine was lying idle until I gathered the funds necessary to upgrade. (I live on the beach and there's lots of moisture and rust). I've just upgraded my motherboard and processor. I'm now running a Gigabyte B75M-D3H (rev 1.1) with an Intel Core i3 3210. But I have not changed my hard disk - which already had Windows 7 64-bit installed on it.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to re-install the OS but when I put everything together, it wouldn't boot the OS from my hard drive. I couldn't seem to restore it either so I just re-installed it.

I downloaded and installed the drivers for my motherboard first, then updated the OS fully with all updates. Then I wasn't sure whether I should connect the graphics card first and then install the drivers or do the opposite but I think I went with the latter - installed the drivers - but I noticed that the Catalyst Control Center wasn't being installed.

Anyway I plugged the graphics card in the motherboard and rebooted, while having the display connected to the graphics card and the graphics card connected to the power supply. The machine wouldn't power up. It looked like for a split second the power came and went.

So I disconnected only the graphics card from the power supply but let it stay in the motherboard and connected the display to the motherboard. This time on power up, everything worked fine. I noticed that the graphics card fan was still running.

Why isn't my system working when I have the graphics card connected to the power supply ?

Motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4315#ov

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017 (but I got mine before the Haswell processors were out so I doubt this is the exact same one, but it could be) also this http://ocz.com/consumer/download/guides/psu_modxstream_pro_manual.pdf - page 23 shows what sort of connectors I have. My motherboard requires an 8 pin CPU 12V connector and I have one of those and one 4 pin one. A computer technician I went to said I should have another 4 pin connector because of some current issue with the 8 pin one. But he seemed to be a noob as my motherboard is running fine with the 8 pin connector so long as the power supply isn't connected to the graphics card.

Graphics Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150505 (my DVI connectors and fan aren't red though and I have 2 DVI ports, an HDMI port and two mini-something-else (DisplayPort i think) ports instead of the one full-sized whatever port this Newegg product has, and the last difference I can notice is that my card has two ports for the PCI-Express power connectors instead of the one for this product.)

Can my Power Supply not support this motherboard AND graphics card or am I making a mistake with the connectors, or is there something wrong with my power supply or graphics card. Help help help :(

Solution
Your card isn't receiving power. All of a card's pci-e power sockets must be connected. At 600w, your PSU should have either a second 6-pin pci-e cable or a convertible 8/6 pin.

install card first, then drivers.

At this point, take the card out; uninstall drivers, put card back in; connect both 6 pin power cables; reinstall drivers.

But then why doesn't my system boot if only my card isn't getting power (while I have my display connected to the motherboard and not the graphics card) ?

I do have 2 6pin PCIe connectors and I have tried connecting them both to the card already. No luck.

I"ll try your solution anyway. Thanks

I already did connect the two PCIe 6 pin power connectors. Should I try connecting just the one PCIe 6 pin power connector instead of both ?
I also installed Microsoft .NET 4.5 . Would I also need .NET 4.0 then ?

Tried your solution, didn't work.

As soon as I connect both 6 pin PCIe connectors and try to boot up, it doesn't boot up.
