I bought this 4 months ago,a 1 tb external seagate hard drive, I turned on today,and wont autoplay and says do you want to format, so clicked no. I had 400gig of rare and untraceable files, I click no and it states itself as a internal drives e.g c drive
d drive and click on properties and its empty...I have not had this happen before.
I hope I havent lost data as its all stuff between me and my sadly passed away with cancer songs we wrote,played and other stuff,did a routine virus check aswell all the time. Why would this not work? the blue light shows...the autoplay shows up on pc...then nothing. How can it just delete all that without me seeing it? Is there anyway to restore it?
I cant loose all that data...but it whirls...with blue light flashing for just a few seconds thn nothing...makes me wonder..how safe is owning a hard drive now...my 500,400,300 drives last forever so far but this 1 tb and that size hwo do we keep data if this can happen? whats a safe and good option I am not having seagate again. any help anyone??? I think data is all gone,no idea how why or when.

also it is not recognised as a seagate, the logo in my computer classes it as a D drive ...not seagate,when I plug usb in,. just a small autoplay and nothing -it just acts as the D drive.No other error messages or anything,can hear it working. Its not plugged in all the time,just odd occasions to back up ( joke! now) my stuff and things I dont want lost or clogging my laptop up.

like the other drive partitions seagate also show its unique name as seagate goflex or removable drive like that choose like this

do this come to c drive from cmd ->cd.. -> cd.. ->then choose your seagate drive letter suppose like its G then
G:\>chkdsk
Ii not seeing in my computer then

chkdsk f: /f

It shows my seagate as a D local drive when I plug it in. The seagate logo and label has gone,it used to load up as my G or F drive but now it shows as local D and no seagate. It shows and dissapears that when I plug it in or out and wont show or open,just the hourglass shows and then nothing,blue light on drive is constant. I tried those instructions and it said
d is not recognised as a internal or external command. The D is what my pc and laptop and netbook pick up when my seagate is plugged in...the G or F no longer shows and no longer shows as seagate just D local drive.,

the other command file...for what my laptop thinks it is...D local drive and it isnt..I did the chkdsk and a box came up as D drive again not seagate,the file size was correct but name was D drive not seagate and asked to format drive which I did not do obviously...thats what keeps happening.

it says that drive is not accessible so i am suggesting only parameter that is chkdsk your local d drive shoing the do you want tot format right ?
do following procedure once again
cmd->chkdsk d: /r
or
cmd -> chkdsk d: /f
or
md-> chkdsk d: /x

try these parameters your problem will solve

no,it isnt saying that...it was my G or F before....now it acts and shows as a local D drive ...I do not wish to format it, firstly I need to get my files out as I tried a data recovery trial software and it allowed 10 files to be saved,but in the search it showed all my files are in there,but I cant access whilst its in this D local drive mode...it doesnt recognise it as seagate anymore.
the file commands you said..f is format right? what does the x do?
I dont want to format as there is tons of my data and files...I need a free recovery data tool for one, and then some software to recognise it as a external seagate again.
I can hear it working...blue light constant...

Its just showing as a local D drive ...but I know my data is on there still. An cant get it out...and no idea why its changed just like overnight from being recognised as seagate,then autoplay shows all files....it has stopped doing all that for some reason.

You're getting some great advice here. You should try what he is recommending.

No, the /f switch does not Format the drive - it "Fixes" errors. You can see a list of the different Chkdsk switches and what they do by running CMD> Chkdsk /?

Yogi I am doing all he has advised and it still is saying not recognised as a internalor external command,operable program or batch file....so I have followed every step...and have followed the advice...it still isnt resolving it though.

The only thing that I can figure is that you are mis-spelling something, like checkdisk instead of the correct chkdsk.

Are you sure of your spelling?

Yogi

As far as I know, the only way to cause Windows to return that specific error message is to mis-spell the command or to make an error in syntax for the switches, like using a backslash instead of a slash. You need to double check what you're typing and try again.

Yogi

OK - Then the only other recommendation that I have is to contact Seagate Technical Support and see if they have any better ideas.

Good luck!
