seagate 1tb external hard drive

I bought this 4 months ago,a 1 tb external seagate hard drive, I turned on today,and wont autoplay and says do you want to format, so clicked no. I had 400gig of rare and untraceable files, I click no and it states itself as a internal drives e.g c drive
d drive and click on properties and its empty...I have not had this happen before.
I hope I havent lost data as its all stuff between me and my sadly passed away with cancer songs we wrote,played and other stuff,did a routine virus check aswell all the time. Why would this not work? the blue light shows...the autoplay shows up on pc...then nothing. How can it just delete all that without me seeing it? Is there anyway to restore it?
I cant loose all that data...but it whirls...with blue light flashing for just a few seconds thn nothing...makes me wonder..how safe is owning a hard drive now...my 500,400,300 drives last forever so far but this 1 tb and that size hwo do we keep data if this can happen? whats a safe and good option I am not having seagate again. any help anyone??? I think data is all gone,no idea how why or when.

How is the disc powered? Does it have a stand alone power brick or does it run off usb?

also it is not recognised as a seagate, the logo in my computer classes it as a D drive ...not seagate,when I plug usb in,. just a small autoplay and nothing -it just acts as the D drive.No other error messages or anything,can hear it working. Its not plugged in all the time,just odd occasions to back up ( joke! now) my stuff and things I dont want lost or clogging my laptop up.

It shows my seagate as a D local drive when I plug it in. The seagate logo and label has gone,it used to load up as my G or F drive but now it shows as local D and no seagate. It shows and dissapears that when I plug it in or out and wont show or open,just the hourglass shows and then nothing,blue light on drive is constant. I tried those instructions and it said
d is not recognised as a internal or external command. The D is what my pc and laptop and netbook pick up when my seagate is plugged in...the G or F no longer shows and no longer shows as seagate just D local drive.,

so it does show a drive is connected when I plug the usb lead in...but just shows as a D local drive for some reason.

the other command file...for what my laptop thinks it is...D local drive and it isnt..I did the chkdsk and a box came up as D drive again not seagate,the file size was correct but name was D drive not seagate and asked to format drive which I did not do obviously...thats what keeps happening.

it says that drive is not accessible so i am suggesting only parameter that is chkdsk your local d drive shoing the do you want tot format right ?
do following procedure once again
cmd->chkdsk d: /r
or
cmd -> chkdsk d: /f
or
md-> chkdsk d: /x

try these parameters your problem will solve

no,it isnt saying that...it was my G or F before....now it acts and shows as a local D drive ...I do not wish to format it, firstly I need to get my files out as I tried a data recovery trial software and it allowed 10 files to be saved,but in the search it showed all my files are in there,but I cant access whilst its in this D local drive mode...it doesnt recognise it as seagate anymore.
the file commands you said..f is format right? what does the x do?
I dont want to format as there is tons of my data and files...I need a free recovery data tool for one, and then some software to recognise it as a external seagate again.
I can hear it working...blue light constant...

Its just showing as a local D drive ...but I know my data is on there still. An cant get it out...and no idea why its changed just like overnight from being recognised as seagate,then autoplay shows all files....it has stopped doing all that for some reason.

You're getting some great advice here. You should try what he is recommending.

No, the /f switch does not Format the drive - it "Fixes" errors. You can see a list of the different Chkdsk switches and what they do by running CMD> Chkdsk /?

The only thing that I can figure is that you are mis-spelling something, like checkdisk instead of the correct chkdsk.

Are you sure of your spelling?

yes yogi i am spelling it correctly and have run chkdsk before on other problems I have had before in the past...it just is not resolving this at all.

As far as I know, the only way to cause Windows to return that specific error message is to mis-spell the command or to make an error in syntax for the switches, like using a backslash instead of a slash. You need to double check what you're typing and try again.

yogi...i am able to spell okay, tried all the steps and got 3 mates here to double check , there is no spelling mistakes...none of those commands are working,nor solving my data recovery which is my key concerns. tons of very personal stuff I cant get back.
I have done all steps and my mates have too..so thats 4 pairs of eyes for mistakes...it wont do anything..

OK - Then the only other recommendation that I have is to contact Seagate Technical Support and see if they have any better ideas.

Good luck!

yeah I did contact them and huge fee for in lab fix....and software is $99 so no way am I paying that,just have to see if I can find anyone who has that software.
I switched caddies also just in case,one guy on geek forum did that and it worked.
so its a doorstop now..or throw the bloody thing out the window!! took me ages to save up for a 4tb drive.

and recuva found files,but it only gives you 10 of them,rest have to pay for the software,as you sent me that link,and its not free,got to pay for it. looks good but aint got that kinda money at the moment.
I have 3 other seagates,the older type and not had this problem before.

No I dont want to format it without trying to recover files somehow,tried commands you said and on the chkdsk f it jutst went rhough it okay and recovering bitmap image and was in 3 of 3 mode and just stayed on that for over 16 hours and didnt know what to do,abort or restart that again. If I format I lose everything and some really sentimental files and songs are on there and photos,so I tried seagate tools and have a error code come up,did also try the recovery which stated 399 hours to complete,left it to start and files seemed to be found but after 36 hours I was unsure it was healthy for my pc and hard drive to be running that lon constantly on. the segate error I have I can tell you if it helps.
I did also use recuva to get files and again they show but I need to buy another drive to save them too as I have no other way to back them up as its a 4tb drive,everything was backed up on there,so need to retrieve and also I gather the error code is going to make me have to send the drive to seagate and become very costly....

tried the data recovery tools and the files are still on the failing seagate 4tb external drive, so got buy another one to save them too.
I also finally could get the seatools diagnostics to work,about 8 attempts before one worked, a error code of E6C26A40 and RMA return is available, its under warranty still as I did the seagate online check-however....trying to get the online email to work on seagate site wont work,not for anything,just fill in all details click submit and nowt happens....read forum on there and alot of problems people are having,as it states to return mine to usa under warranty,they can do data recovery also but a new 4tb drive here is cheaper and wont choose seagate again!!!.....so my problem still is to get files out,is there a cheaper online storage service until I can save up yet again for a new 4tb.....and anyone had any luck with seagate usa and returning their drive as they ' promise' they do ...my warranty is up to 2015 but dont kinda want to wait that long!....so where I am at is ...a cheap option to store the files 4tb worth cheaply for now once recovered....and also is it okay to keep pc and hard drive running fro days on end whilst it retrieves them? or is there a partial way to do it with the seagate software...links for software didnt work but a guy gave me a disc he bought from seagate direct...and 2nd thing anyone got a direct email for seagate as the online forms and links are not working to submit my case.hopefully explained that better

also my laptop and pc do not recognise any of my other seagates also now which is a bit weird,they autoplay but no logo comes up and no longer are they f drive or g drive but d local drive is how they are coming up,they arent failing,all files are there ....just odd they are all doing it now...any feedback on that??

yeah I got your reply,so i know how to format it once data is recovered,I just dont have at the moment money to store 4tb anywhere...so data is there,which is great and yeah after alot of attempts with seagate software I found files are there,but as above the seagate software said the error code... error code of E6C26A40 and RMA return is available - it states in lab recovery is needed on seagates website and its under warranty...so either way I am trying cheapest option on where to store the 4tb that I found and know files are there,thats a relief...however seagate charge usa a fortune more than the drive to recover data so have to do that myself...but.... the error code with their software diagnostics is to replace the hard drive....but....online...their submit and send for that isnt working...and I cant afford to call usa and sort it...there is no direct email,just online form,which works to a certain point but then sticks/freezes...so after data recover not via them I have still the issue of they say they will replace this drive but cant contact them via website form...entered serial code and other codes to confirm warranty...went through all that and go to submit and it wont go through at all. the interesting fact is I have full other hard drives seagates ones on xp all wont recognise seagate my other drives like i omega etc all pop up as they are,no seagate drive I have comes up anymore as a f drive or g drive...i omega and others do...so is that a xp update problem??? ....4 all come up only as local d drive....and no longer recognise them as seagate or f or g drives....so that is odd.
seagate have a forum and lots of people have same problem...drive failed...wont recognise drive...yet i omega drives and others I have do...and also others have the same problem...we log on to seagate with warranty,it states error code and we enter that and answer the online form,which is all they offer...unless i run a phone bill up to up to usa. all have problems with replacements...seeing as no other working drive I have other than this ...isnt working in xp....i am not sure what is the problem ...my other 4 drives are 300 ....5000 and they work fine...just dont come up as seagate so is it a xp issue?? and seagate are hard to contact..used all your links and did all you said...and that error code came up and I am supposed to send th drive to usa to have it replaced but forms to do that are not working on their website and the forum is full of the same problem of others.I appreciate and did follow all you said.

sorry that was 300 gig,500 gig not 5000.
have 4 seagate all full....am just saying my xp just stopped recognising seagate and the logo pops up has gone and now just local d drive is what they show as...so wondering if thats a xp problem as my other drives which are not seagate all appear and run...the 300 and 500 seagate drive do autoplay bit dont come up as seagate anymore.

odd...as other brands of hardrives I have do still show as what they are but seagate doesnt.

I am seeking a cheap option to recover files..which I bought recover ..think yogi mentioned it so bought it and yeah files are there still.cant afford a new 4tb drive so was asking a few questions...one...is online storage offers reliable and safe ...is it cheaper to tide me over...until I can get seagate to replace my faulty drive as warranty expires 2015 ..but in seagate forum ..alot fo people seem to be having alot of issues,. seagtes software I did all said and advised from you and others....it picked up a error code...went into seagates tech page to submit faulty drive...but it isnt working so its another question ...anyone been successful as pc world wont take drive back and replace due to it being a data fault ...so...am lost...as to how to get usa seagate to replace as I followed all your advice and yogi...and drive has error code from links you both sent and its a in lab or replace drive but no direct email just the submit and that isnt working ..for 2 weeks now been trying. so I did take on board what you said but need to put the 4tb data elsewhere and then tackle...a format...or a replacement drive from usa...all very confusing so hope this post explains what I have done.
