Methods of transferring data to NAS (My Book Live Duo)?

What is the fastest way to transfer data from my PC to my new WD My Book Live Duo?

I started by setting it up as Raid 1 which took a while, and then plugged the my book into the router (due to the location of the wall socket, the router wasn't connected directly to my PC). Started copying and saw it was only doing 2.4mb/s so cancelled that. Then I stretched the router to the room with the PC and connected the two but that made little difference. Can I cut the router out of the equation and use the cable (think its Ethernet right?) to copy day directly from the PC to the my book? The my book has a USB port on it but I think that's just for adding another hdd externally to read from.

Any help appreciated :)

Oh, and possibly off topic, but should I be using the WLAN socket on the router? Ashamed to say I'm not sure what that's used for :-/

Thanks,
Sax

Solution
To change the adapter priority go to the network control panel, select change adapter settings, hit the alt key, select advanced from the toolbar, and advanced settings in the drop down list. Then in the adapters and bindings tab move the local area network above the wireless adapter using the arrows on the right side.

What model router?

Generally I would say no, it should attach to an LAN port (and your router should have 4 of those) and the WAN port should attach to the modem, but some have an extra configurable port. If you are using wireless, then it would be faster to load everything with a direct connection to a computer that has all the files.

If that is a USB 3.0 port, that will be faster than wireless if your computer has a USB 3.0 port also.

If you have a gigabit Ethernet connection, then that will do fine. Transferring large amounts of data can take time but you should get much better than 2-3MB/s unless you use wireless.

It's a bt home hub 4 model. PC has an
atheros ar8151 pci e gigabit ethernet adaptor. Everything I want to transfer is from that PC... I just can't work out how to transfer without using wifi. Not sure the USB connection on the storageis meant for that... Think it's just for adding an external drive. I went out to try buying a cable to attempt a direct USB connection, but all I could find was USB to mini USB cables.

Thanks for your answers. I agree that pretty much any connection's going to be faster than the wifi, but that being said, I can't work out how to get it to transfer using ethernet cables. I currently have the cat6 cable from the pc running to the router, and the My Book's also connected via ethernet to the router. I have to use the 'run' box, type in something like //mybookliveduo (can't recall exactly as writing this from work) and then copying into the files that show. I'm lucky if I get over 2mb/s transfer speeds.

I've been searching forums and prople are complaining about 12-40mb/s speeds, so I'm crying inside when it takes a day just to transfer my films starting with 'a'...

When I look at my connections, I have the wireless (which it seems to be using, and a LAN (with no internet) but I wouldn't know how (or if it's possible) to transfer using LAN.

Sorry, I'm not as clued up and I wish I could be.

Since you know that the Ethernet cable from the router to My Book works, you just need to get the Ethernet connection from your computer to the router to work. You may need to change the adapter priority and place the Ethernet adapter above the wireless adapter in priority.

Bit of a result... If I disable wifi on the PC it then uses the LAN connection. Getting about 10Mb/s using a cat6 from the pc to port 4 on the router. Not sure how I can have both at the same time, where might I set priorities mate? In fact, should I even need the wifi dongle if my pc's now wired up to the router? I only had the PC built with a wireless card/dongle for at my old house. Now the router's next to the PC though.

You could try a cross over cable and hook both devices up through the network cards
