Hello,

I'm not sure if that is explained in a way that is easy to understand. I am wondering if there is any possible way to copy a group of files that are contained in a folder from their shortcut links contained in a separate folder.

Basically I want to sort my movie files into various folders based on genre but some files would need to go in multiple folders. In order to save space by not having multiple copies of large files (and also to keep the files linked in case of name change, etc.), I decided on using shortcuts. This however creates a problem when I want to copy those movie files a usb drive.

Has anyone ever had a similar problem or can anyone thing of a solution for me?

You are trying to do a very cumbersome and unneeded thing. Especially putting the files in more than one folder, even with a shortcut. Either use one folder per movie or keep them all in the same place.

If you want to sort by genre, try MyMovies Database. http://www.mymovies.dk/
I have one folder per movie, inside a root Movies directory that MyMovies indexes.

Using metadata or adding tags is all well and good but it gets difficult when the files are not all of the same format. So far I have not found a way to universally alter metadata for video files.

Going file by file is fine for a few files but when there are hundreds it can be a hassle.
