GTX 700 Series, 4GB vs. 2GB

I've been scouring forums and benchmarks to no avail, to figure out one question I have that will determine my next GPU purchase:

Am I better off getting the GTX 760 with 4 or 2GB of RAM/ 760 vs. 770 vs. 780.

I'm just not finding the correct answer, not only that but every forum question and honest curiosity just turns into an AMD vs Nvidia debate, so I figured I'd try my luck.

As of right now, my gaming is strictly at the 1080p res. Not hoping to jump into higher res gaming just yet, that would be for the subsequent upgrade after this one.

I very much enjoy hyper-realistic graphics: Assassin's Creed 3, Crysis 3, Skyrim, as well as the new games coming out later this year.
Hoping for frames above at least 55-60 (or at least stable between 55-60 as I will be using Nvidia's adaptive Vsync (or normal Vsync). I'll turn off AA if necessary to achieve those targets.
I'm big into Skyrim graphical modding, as well as high res textures, so that's where I figured the 4GB would do me good, but people say the 256 bit memory bus can't or won't handle memory over 2GB very well or at all and that it's just a marketing ploy.

As of now I'm set on Nvidia. I've had AMD cards in the past and I just think the technology, in addition to EVGA's editions is definitely the smarter buy.

I was looking at the old 660ti's/670's/680's until the 700 series was announced, and the 760 was right in my price range, with its new 256 bit memory bus.
But now I'm trying to decide between 2-4GB of VRAM, and whether to get the 760, 770, or 780, etc.

future upgrades are probably just an i5-i7, SSD, peripherals, performance increases like that. definitely looking into a 120fps monitor.
not a big fan of multi-monitor, really, or 3d. 4k is interesting but again, not going to be something im looking into until about 3-5 years from now. until they become cheap and mainstream, and the cards can handle that without me dishing out a couple grand on cards alone.

anyway, thats what i'm curious about really. ive looked at benchmarks of the EVGA 760 and i see that it performs well at stock clock, and a noticeable amount better with OCing, at 1080p res. able to max at most, if not all games (some with or without AA) so that's why it has drawn me towards it.

but with that being said:

is 4gb THAT unnecessary with my gaming type?

is it smarter for me to just go with the 2GB?

is the EVGA 770 a better buy than the EVGA 760?

any help towards this would be really appreciated.

Solution
Yes. From what I've have seen, gaming with the 4GB model even at a resolution of 2560x1600 proved useless compared to the 2GB model. The only reason for a 4GB 770 is if you are gaming on a tri-monitor setup.

The 760 isn't strong enough to use up 4GB of vram so it's considered a gimmick. A EVGA 760 SC w/ ACX would go for 260$ while a EVGA 770 SC w/ ACX would go for 460$. 200$ for a 18% performance increase ->http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1805&gid2=1797&compare=geforce-gtx-760-evga-sc-w-acx-2gb-edition-vs-geforce-gtx-770-evga-sc-w-acx-edition
If you can afford a 770 then go for it but if you want to be a bit frugal and feel like a 200$ hit for a 18% performance increase isn't worth it, then go with the 760.
But keep in mind, a 670 does outperform a 760 slightly at 1080p while the 760 outperforms the 670 at 1440p.

only needing 4GB as in SLIing two cards both with 2GB each?

hmm. what if i looked into getting the EVGA 2gb 760 sc with ACX now, and then later down the line just SLIing them?

You will be fine, just make sure you have a strong enough PSU and SLI capable Mobo when do you SLI them. SLI does have it's headaches/ drawbacks (Higher temps, higher power draw, games have to be SLI optimized for you to see the performance increase...) but if your up for it, go ahead.
SLi 760 vs 770 -> http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1823&gid2=1797&compare=geforce-gtx-760-sli-vs-geforce-gtx-770-evga-sc-w-acx-edition

First of all the 760 can easily handle the 4gb the speed of the memory and the 256 bit memory interface address it easily.
What the others are stating applied with the far slower gddr3 memory

@ 1080P 4GB is never going to be of any use at all.

2GB is plenty, all the best

SLI doesn't double available VRAM.

If there were a scenario using more than 2GB of VRAM the 760 wouldn't be putting out a playable framerate, you'd need to decrease settings, reducing VRAM usage. Plus its not like FPS totally dies once the buffer is filled.
