Hi
I am having issues with my computer rebooting shortly after playing a game. This has been the case with both Battlefield 3 and Black Ops 2. Upon restart there are no new mini dumps and when the computer restarts the graphics card hardly seems like its under significant load.
My first guess is the graphics card is on its last legs but i thought i might check if there is any other solutions here first.

My system:
i5 2400 (3.1ghz)
OCZ 4gb ddr3 1600mhz
EVGA 550TI sc
ASUS p67 mpro motherboard
Adata 128gb ssd
1tb WD secondary
500W coolermaster psu

Solution
monitor your cpu and gpu temps with HWMonitor or Core Temp + GPU-z (turn log on) so u can see which temps were reached before pc restarts.

Ok so i tried HWmonitor pro but it didnt seem to save the logs when i clicked start recording... I did however use MSI afterburner to get the gpu at least. Resting was about 27 degrees c. upon crash max temp was 40 degrees c with a load between 96 and 99%. fan speed changed from 40 at rest to 44 when the crash occurred. I am also on the lastest Nvidia drivers (was the first thing i did when i started to get problems). Also now on the restart after game crash the computer sometimes crashes on the windows load screen.

Memtest resulted in 0 errors over 3 passes. PSU model is RS-500-PCAR-J3

after running prime 95 for a while. Not much change occured in any temperature. However i got an error message on one of the 4 workers. " FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" then it says "Hardware failure detected: consult stress.txt". I can't seem to find that file though....

Also the PSU I am hopefully upgrading to a >800W to accommodate a GTX590 I might be getting. However I have had this same setup for 2 years so why would the PSU suddenly be causing problems as i was playing battlefield 3 and blackops 2 the night before fine?

since RAM passed memtest ok, CPU and GPU aren't overheating, and your CPU is with no OC then yes, the PSU seems to be the reason, on a stable pc there shouldn't be errors on Prime95, try running it again this time monitoring the PSU voltages with HWMonitor Pro, voltages should stay close to its original value (3.3V at 3.3, 5V at 5.0 etc)

I took a screenshot near the start and one after the error:

oh.. yours is a trial version, however on CPU temps (the ones that get displayed anyway) are getting around 90ºC+ (checking your previous post I misread thinking that u had also posted CPU temps)

Your CPU hitting high 90ºC+ is a worrying situation, easily explains your crashes.

Verify these reads with Core Temp just to make sure is not a bad report from the trial version.

If those temps are correct, clean all the dust inside your case, maybe the thermal paste has worn off (usually lasts for 1-2 years depending on use) so reapplying it should cause a great improvement on your temps.

Just Ran prime95 small fft test for 5 hours. Core Temp confirmed these high temperatures but no errors were reported and the computer never crashed... :??: wouldn't a stress test be more likely to cause a crash than a game?

Finally got a minidump after computer restarted when i was trying to the extra junk that installed with CoreTemp. 'WhoCrashed' reported a "VIDEO TDR ERROR" which was obviously related to nvidia drivers...

So I have 3 potential culprits:
-Bad quality PSU
-Overheating CPU (by the way i cleared my PC of dust only a few weeks ago and applied new thermal paste afterwards to CPU and GPU)
-GPU dying and/or bad drivers

Im going to roll back the nvidia drivers tomorrow and see if that changes things.

Ok so rolling back the driver didn't change anything... any suggestions??

EDIT: Problem Solved!
Thought I would do a Bios update since i had not done one after installing windows 8....
Played a whole round of battlefield 3 with no problems =)
