I just recently built my first gaming computer about a month ago, I wanted to maximize my performance per dollar, so I took a big risk and bought the majority of my parts used. Once I completed my computer I ran prime95 and multiple GPU stress tests and everything passed with flying colors. The only problem I've ran into is my screen will randomly turn black; and I have no idea what triggers it. The two most common occurences are when I am playing Empire Total War and when I am using a Virtual TI83 calculator to do my online statistics homework. The only surefire way to get it to black screen is doing my math homework, always about 30-40 minutes in it will black screen, but audio will still come out fine. I avidly monitor my temps with both speedfan and CPUID, nothing out of the norm except my TMPIN01 temps hover around 46c while doing light tasks and bump up to 60c when gaming or heavy load. Everything else hovers around 30c at idle (cpu drops down to 19c). None of my temps have ever exceeded 63c. CPU temp in bios is usually around 56-58c.

My attempts to remedy the problem:
Looked at Eventviewer but nothing shows up except for me cutting the power unexpectedly
Ran prime95 blend for 5 hours with no errors or overheating
Ran both prime95 blend test and GPU stress test at the same time to attempt to recreate a black screen, didn't work.
Turned off all power saving features/screen timeout, didn't work
Tried unplugging the tv and letting it cool off and plugging it back in, didn't work
Tried switching to a different tv after it black screened, didn't work
Tried plugging straight into wall rather than a power bar, didn't work
Tried fiddling with the cables, didn't work
Tried underclocking GPU, didn't work
Tried reseating RAM, didn't work
Tried cleaning off all thermal paste with alcohol and Qtip and applying a bit less (I was certain I put too much on), didn't help

TL;DR, My computer randomly black screens but audio still works and only way to fix is to do a hard reset. Please help me computer gurus!!

Solution

1-Uninstall any installed drivers
2-Plug your GPU onto another slot
3-Re-Download Drivers, non-beta drivers. Officially tested drivers.
4-Installed them and it should be working without problems.

I appreciate the idea and yesterday I went through and uninstalled all my video card drivers and reinstalled them, but it black screened once again today while watching a music video. Were you talking about other drivers? If so which ones? thanks again

i had the same issue heres the fix :

1.update msi 970 g46 to bios 2.5 and flash gigabyte 7960 to bios FY1
2. go into the bios at startup Change to ''Standard Mode'' (between eco and oc mode)
3. go under ''energy savings'' and disable all options
4.go into safe mode with networking in windows (f8 at start)
5. enable Windows installer - open cmd as adminstrator , enter command :
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"

6. uinstaller catalyst with the intstaller manager and reboot
7. DOWNLOAD and install the ''amd uninstaller ultilty'': http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx
8. run as admin , at the prompt SHUTDOWN
9. put the Gigabyte in the first slot closest to the cpu
10. boot up , and install catalyst like normal , reboot
11. enable amd overdrive gpu , change GPU CLOCK to 800 and MEM CLOCK to 1050 , profit :)
