Hi, I own a HP pavilion dv-5 1235ec notebook, with factory Win. Vista, which I upgraded to Win 7. That worked fine for a long time, almost 4 years.

About 2 weeks ago, Win 7 suddenly couldn't boot up - it was stuck on a black screen even before the welcome screen came on. BIOS was working and couldn't detect any problems. After trying to boot up from my Windows disc, everything suddenly went smoothly and Windows booted up without a hitch. I still re-installed it and cleaned up any malware and things like that. It worked fine.

Now, suddenly, the same problem is back. Even before the welcome screen arrives, a black screen (with a flashing underscore) appears, my computer works for a few seconds, then stops.

I reset my BIOS settings to no avail, running system recovery shows the same black screen. Tried getting to safe mode, but either I'm hitting the wrong keys or the advanced boot settings simply just do not work. My Windows disc is at home so I can't recover like that. Any ideas? Thanks for help.

Your hard drive might be damaged but it is hard to tell. 4 years is a long time for a laptop to work and it probably needs a good service or replacement. See if you can see the drive in the bios maybe the drive has come loose inside the laptop.

Well, it seems the problem is solved. The hard drive died, I tried testing it one more time in BIOS and the test wouldn't even finish. Even with my Windows disc, I can't get it to boot, so I guess it's time to consider a new laptop.
