Hello, im very frustrated because i can play GTA 4 only on minimum graphics.
I would like to play the newest games on max. Would i have to do something drastic for that? Maybe just a new graphics card?
My computer:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 - 3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz
Memory: 8,00 GB
System type: 64 - bit
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Display: 1080p full HD

I don't know much about computers so help would be appreciated!

Well, it depends on you budget. But the only thing is bottleknecking your system is GPU.
Great choices are 7970, 770. Both of them can handle newest games on max graphics 1080p.

That's strange. GTA IV should run fine on Nvidia cards since it's optimised for Nvidia. A good friend of mine has the same GPU as you and plays at the same res' and he runs GTA IV fine. I'm not sure what graphical settings he runs it at but I know he plays it in 1080p. You can't play the newest games maxed out with that Graphics Card though. If you want to play the newest games maxed out, I'd look into getting a 7970 or a 660TI. Those graphics cards are affordable. Try reinstalling the game.

GTA IV, by all reports, does not run fine on any system, unless you are ok with a lot of low FPS moments.

To get the best results, you'll want to get a CPU that is capable of OCing, and take that i5/i7 to 4.5Ghz or as close as you can.

You will also need a faster GPU for "MAX" graphics. Most people, even those who claim to play at max settings, do not. They turn down a few things like AA, or shadows, and forget to inform you of that when they say they max out a game.

Exactly this! I have a 4670k and a 7970 and I can't play the latest games on max. So if you wanted to do that, then I suggest you get a GTX780 or wait for AMDs new GPUs next month.

Thanks for help! I have a chance to try 7970 on my computer and see if it maxes my games out, if yes, then i will buy it.
Sadly GTX780 is too much for my budget.

Considering your build I'm wondering what type of monitor you are using? Perhaps you have a 120 or 144hz monitor instead of a 60hz? Most likely that's not the case considering your other components but you never know, some people splurge on the monitor first. I agree with all the others above in terms of upgrading your gpu but also your cpu could be a bottleneck on the upgraded gpu and now we are talking another budget all together. Also how strong of a psu do you currently use? In any case make sure the psu can handle your new gpu but that would be the most cost effective initial approach and if you run into other issues you can deal with upgrading those other parts later and at least enjoy some improved gameplay in the meanwhile. Maxing out games is a relative view unless you are a purist then it gets really expensive! I'm guessing you'd like to be close to maxing out as possible and a simple gpu upgrade will get you closer their the fastest. Don't be discouraged, save up their first and you'll be on your way! Best of luck and have fun!
