So,

My computer came with windows 7 home
i upgraded it to windows 7 professional.

I have a microsoft dreamspark account and I want to get windows 8 professional.

But i have heard that windows 8 isn't too good on desktops.

So if i were to download it, and i don't like windows 8, could i get back windows 7?

If you get the upgrade to Windows 8, no. Upgrading negates your previous Windows 7 install.
If you get a non-upgrade version, then yes you can use both.

Or...you can try out Windows 8 in a VM. No risk to your original Windows 7 install.

I have both on a spare laptop. Win 7 Pro and Win 8.1 (previously Win 8). Dual boots with zero problems.

You can if you get another hard drive. The easiest way is to unplug your old drive, install Windows on the new drive, and then plug your old drive back in. Then you can select which one you wan to boot in the BIOS.

By the way, you might be able to get the full version of Windows 8.1 (not just the consumer preview) with your MSDN access. I know I can.
