Random GPU Driver crashes

Hi all,

I just recently joined this site as a sort of last-ditch effort to fix my computer. I frequent the site itself, often looking at posts by others to try and fix issues of my own. The community on here seems to be able to solve almost all issues. So here's mine..

I built my own system in 2011. Up until April of 2013, everything ran perfect. In April, I started to see random driver crashes occuring more and more often.. I'm running on a ZOTAC GTX 460 1gb. The crashes turn my screen black for 2 seconds and always recover, showing what i was doing as if I had never experienced any error at all..

Not too soon after these issues began, due to neglect, I overheated and eventually killed my PSU and motherboard (PSU first, then mobo lit on fire after i put in new PSU). I FINALLY recently came back to this build, and tried to fix it. replaced both parts and significantly upgraded the airflow in my computer. I constantly watch the temps of my card, and my GTX 460 doesn't (and has never) seemed to be running hotter than anyone elses.

I thought that a fried/dying PSU and motherboard were what were causing my driver crashes. However, after getting my computer up and running again ( before the PSU/mobo upgrade, i couldn't even get a post) I'm still experiencing frequent driver crashes. I randomly get them during internet browsing and see them much more often when playing even basic games like League of Legends. I downloaded Furmark to test my stability and ran it until my temp was at 90C before stopping it. It never crashed. I played skyrim on max settings to test it, and it crashed one time over a 10 minute period. When i play League, I experience crashes 3-10 times per 40 minute period along with screen tearing and random shadow issues. I turned my GTX 460 down recently and, while I have seen a very small improvement in the frequency of these crashes, they still occur even when i'm just on my desktop. I rolled back my drivers to 314.22 from the newest ones because I read many reports of crashes with that driver set but still experience crashes frequently. I ran a memtestx 86 through and got one pass, although i'm about to leave it on for 6-7 hours to see if that will help identify whether memory is the problem. Bottom line.. Could my graphics card be damaged from when my PSU slowly burned out and died? before my first PSU died i experienced several crashes that I would just ignore. i'm completely up to date with all of my drivers, as far as i know.

Anyone who could help solve this great mystery would forever be praised.

UPDATE : I ran memtest for about 7 hours (almost 4 passes) and got no errors whatsoever. I'm going to purchase a new card and see if that does the trick. Thanks for taking the time to confirm this with me, I'll update again after i get another card in there so that you can get a better idea of what to do with your system.

So I just got my MSI GTX 650 ti Boost 2 GB from Newegg today, installed it, and have had no problems since the change. I read about the 320.49 driver issues.. But I think my card was just fried. However, when i had my GTX 460 in, rolling back my drivers caused significantly less driver crashing. Maybe that was a part of my problem.

If anyone's interested in a budget upgrade, the card I purchased is absolutely wonderful. I just played 45 minutes of Skyrim with every graphic setting turned up to max and saw no temps above 50C (granted my case has 7 fans total now).
